I have a vm that had to be restored from backups. The original vm was not deleted, so when the new vm was created, it was placed in a folder on the same datastore as the original vm but I called this on Server-NEW. After that I realized I then needed to restore the 2 additional drives that were attached to this vm. So when restoring that, I placed them in a folder on the same datatore named Server-DATA. So now that I got everything recovered and the vm is back up and fully functional, I'd like to consolidate all 3 drives to the same folder. If I use Storage vMotion and point it to the datastore it's already on, will it create a new folder and consolidate the drives to that new folder or will it see the drives are already on that datastore and do nothing? Will I have to do an initial Storage vMotion to a different datastore then another Storage vMotion back to the original datastore?
If you attempt to perform a storage vMotion to the datastore it currently lives on, the task will immediately be marked as COMPLETED. I recommend moving it to another datastore and then back again.
Moving all the files new Data store will give you two benefits:
1) Datastore folder name reflects same as display name
2) All disk files moved to single folder
This will allow you to delete your old VM files and also zombie drives/files
