Excellent tool for Windows admins with little to no *nix experience. I had no problem getting it running in 5 minutes. It took up little to no resources on an existing server. I saw no performance impact. I highly recommend this vmware appliance.

At minimum I would like to see info posted on how to :

    1. How do you auto start the vmware player at system boot and auto point it to the DansGuardian "squid.vmx" file. - without a user logging into the server. currently if the physical server gets rebooted then you as the admin have to start the vmware player and pick the .vmx file to start.

    2. integrate Active Directory authentication with DansGuardian and IE proxy settings

    3. have reports show the username and/or computer name instead of IP

I’ve tried changing the following settings under DG “View\Edit Config” without success.

    a) Username Identification (Proxy Auth)

    b) Username Identification (Identd)

    c) Reverse Client IP Lookups

    3. flush the report logs of all browsing history to start reporting from scratch. I went through the DG and Squid settings with no luck hunting and pecking.

Is there a forum I can go to get this info?

You need to convert Player to run as a Service, via SrvAny or similar application in order to do this. As far as starting, all you should need is a shortcut to the vmx file - Your OS should have associated those with Player already. The easier, IMO, answer is to use the also free VMware Server, which allows you to set VMs to load as Services on system boot, etc.

I'm having trouble unzipping any of the downloads of this appliance. I've tried both with and without Webmin as well as the split version. I've tried WinRar as well as the built-in zip functionality in XP and both report a corrupt archive for all three downloads.

What am I missing? Thanks for any ideas!

    Hi folks,

I hope someone sees this. I am somewhat new to the vmworld and loving this technology. One of the first things I decided to play with is virtual appliances in Vmware Server. I downloaded the squid webmin version of the appliance with dansgaurdian. Very simple to setup as it is blocking the specific sites etc. The problem I am having is that in the instructions it makes mention on how to access the reporting functionality by typing your ip address which min eis

Did anyone else have this issue?? I made the appliance satic via the netconfig command etc. How do I access these reports?

    I get the following:

While trying to retrieve the URL: 10.0.0.99:443

Another thing is regarding the sarg, I want to have the squid-reports published without going to webmin... anyone has an idea?

and regarding Clam AV , does anyone know of a graphical way to see the AV reports? updates, virus blocking reports , etc..?

    does the clamd auto update?

Just though I would throw my point across...

There is an excellent article on running a VMware appliance as a windows service on Firedaemons website http://forums.firedaemon.com/viewtopic.php?t=139 which I can confirm works very well with this appliance.

I have a different issue with this appliance though, I am getting corrupted downloads of executables though squid, and not corrupted when I bypass the proxy. For example if I dl AVG aniti spyware, it downloads but is 22kb smaller than the original non squid version; its also corrupted and will not install. I don't yet know how to resolve this. Web browsing works perfect, but windows updates are also effected by this same annoyance. I have tried changing many cache options, including rebuilding the cache to no avail. I am wondering if this is an error brought in by using Vmware to emulate CentOS & Squid?

Anybody encountered this? or have the solution?

I'm answering my own question here, but someone else may benefit from the information.

I could not get past the corruption issue of downloaded exe's using this appliance. As a test, I made a new VMware appliance and installed FreeBSD. I then added squid, and tested downloads via the proxy with no problems. I then added dansguardian, and everything still works. The corruption issue must be with the appliance, and not vmware emulation related. Unfortunately the lastest webmin won't list dansguardian in the server page, and will not support the latest squid builds, but manual configuration is a small price to pay for a working squid & dansguardian. If I get time, I will make a new (generic) one add it to the appliances.

Is anyone having problem with loading the AOL homepage? I've put AOL in the exception list but the formatting for that page is still coming out weird. Looks very primitive with just text and broken picture links. I've turned off picture filtering as well.

    :

Try logging in as root, Password proxy2006. Then at prompt enter:

    tail -f /var/log/dansguardian/access.log

^c will get you back to prompt.

    Hope that helps

i think it's way too big.. a single purpose appliance shouldn't be bigger than 100mb, perhaps 200 if built on a general purpose os.

  • 19.  RE: Squid Proxy with DansGuardian Content filtering

    Posted Dec 26, 2007 01:42 PM

But does it work for you?

I am not concerned of the appliance size.

yeah it works. i had it running in my virtual DMZ but I'm missing an interface to add custom filters. but since it's too big for me i built one myself and mine is some 350mb. built in on ubuntu 6 lts. i think i'll strip it down some more to get it under 200mb. also looking for a nice webinterface for guardian.

I rate the configuration #1 out of 10. This is a proxy but not

    configured correctly.

I'll create a proxy for local and server operations and have it run on

    something smaller than 50 megs.

    700+ mb for just a proxy? 50mb

or less can produce the same results.

Have you created the proxy to run on something smaller than 50mb yet? I amtrying to wor with the DG vm but it is causing me all kinds of problems

I have just installed the virtual appliance on my Windows 2003 Server (running VMware Server).

I have configured my browsers proxy settings and Dansguardian appears to be doing its thing, how easy!

BUT, can someone point me to some documentation that describes how to access the webmin interface?

The IP address of the virtual machine is 192.168.0.16, so I tried using:

    None of the above worked

I fail to see the point in running this virtual machine without knowing how to configure it

    Cheers

The Dalmatech website has zero information as does the vmware site.

    Hi.

This is probably an oversight on my part but I've got the file unzipped, booted the VM and am prompted to log in but I didn't see what username or password I should use. Can someone let me know?

    Thanks.

It's on the page where you download the file from.

    But here it is again:
