SQL server over MSDE, MSDE is slow and I think it's still limited to 2GB max database size (which doesn't take long to reach with VC) like the old Access database was. Anyway, for production setups, you should use SQL server.

FYI: The new SQL 2005 MSDE is limited to 4GB and the usable memory has dropped from 2GB to 1GB

But I agree that it's dead slow and nothing one should use in production.

    not to mention,

MSDE and SQL Express are NOT SUPPORTED!

But apart from the that, the spce issue will come back to haunt you in a matter of months!

Along with all the other things that have been mentioned full SQL Server is manageable, MSDE is not easily managed.

I prefer SQL Server over MSDE. I'm sure most everyone else would recommend full SQL Server over MSDE.

True, but they fixed that in SQL Express. Still, the support issue and space constraints should be enough to deter!

I agree. Not being supported and lack of DB space is enough to make the case.

I think the general consensus here is don't use it for production or you're asking for trouble. The biggest downside is you have to spend money for a SQL server license to use VirtualCenter. See this thread also...

    http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=67175

Page 57 of the install guide says "MSDE is not supported for production environments. You must use an Oracle or SQL

    database to receive enterprise support."

So if you have a problem and have to call support they might not help you with it if it is database related.
