  • 1.  Snort virtual appliance install - dead link?

    Posted May 04, 2008 11:08 PM

    Hi,

I'm not having any success downloading the snort virtual appliance from here (http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/185)

Upon clicking the "Download this appliance" a new window opens, text flashes saying "Please be patient while we process your request" and then the status bar at the bottom of the window says "Done." Ran Wireshark to see if any data was going over the wire after the "Done" notice and nothing happens.

Is anyone else able to download? Is the appliance still available?

Also, is this secure? After clicking "Download this appliance," the URL references BitTorrent. Is this transmitted P2P?

I tried this on Windows using Firefox and IE.

The file is a torrent, which means you will need to have some sort of torrent client in order to download. The file you downloaded is probably just a tracker, to help you find a server in order to download the actual bits for the virtual appliance. Torrents can and can not be secure, depends on what you are downloading. Torrents are simply a means of decreasing load on a download server, by sharing the download bandwidth of all users together. Several sites will use torrents to decrease the total bandwidth that they have to pay for.

    Hello,

I merged the two threads on the same subject into one... And moved the post to the Virtual Machine and Guest OS forum.

    ....

Upon clicking the "Download this appliance" a new window opens, text flashes saying "Please be patient while we process your request" and then the status bar at the bottom of the window says "Done." Ran Wireshark to see if any data was going over the wire after the "Done" notice and nothing happens.

You should get a web form to register on the VMTN or something like that prior to the download occurring. IE and Firefox both work fine.

Is anyone else able to download? Is the appliance still available?

    It is.

Also, is this secure? After clicking "Download this appliance," the URL references BitTorrent. Is this transmitted P2P?

Yes, click on the 'What is BitTorrent', http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent, link to find out more about it, and you will need a bit torrent client. Be sure to get it from the Bit Torrent website only.

I tried this on Windows using Firefox and IE.

Interesting, as both those work for me. It may be a security setting thing. I do know they were working on the website so you may want to retry today.
