Slow mouse (vSphere Client after Open Console)

  • 1.  Slow mouse (vSphere Client after Open Console)

    Posted Apr 02, 2011 04:05 PM

I have a brand new install of VMware (Essentials Plus).  I'm also very new to the VMware world, so I'm still struggling to catch on.

When I connect via vSphere Client and select "Open Console" for any of my VMs, the mouse becomes unworkably slow and jumpy.

    Specs:

    • I have 2 hosts;  12 VMs total
    • I see the same slow mouse if my client is installed on XP-Pro or Server2003.
    • All of the VMs are Server2008 R2.  All servers settings are at default.

I saw some old discussion of similar trouble on this site but no definitive resolution.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Welcome to the Community,

the solutions for Windows 2003/XP and 2008 R2 are different. Unless already done, install VMware Tools in the virtual machines.

for Windows 2003 and XP follow http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002450 to enable the hardware acceleration

    for Windows 2008 R2 follow http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1016770

Don't forget to adjust the video RAM as described in the article, otherwise you may end up with a black console!

Still doesn't work.  The mouse is still slow and choppy.

I installed the WDDM driver and rebooted.

    Here's what I know:

    • The VirtualMachine is running Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Device Manager lists "VMware SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)" for Display Adapter
    • I am running Hardware Version 7
    • The Video memory is:
      • Total available graphics memory 72MB
      • Dedicated video memory 8MB

I don't see any way to change the VRAM.  I'd like to increase it to 32MB as recommended.  Is there some method to do this?

To change the video ram, edit the settings of the "Video Card" in the VM's properties, while the VM is powered off.

Thanks for the tip.  It's much easier than trying to edit the .vmx file for (svga.vramSize) memory allocation!

    Unfortunately, it didn't work.  :smileysad:

I increased the VRAM to 32MB and restarted the VM.

The mouse is still slow and choppy.

    Any other suggestions?

On our 2008 R2 boxes it is part of our build process.

    Install Tools

    Shutdown

Increase video memory to 16mb on guest

    Power On

Install WDDM drivers (within device manager)

I have yet to see these steps not work.

After you install tools you can find the driver here

    c:\program files\common files\vmware\drivers\wddm_video

generally this step isn't required as the video memory increase fixes it.

I've sorted my out by setting the Hardware Acceleration to full.

    Welcome to the communities.

Make sure you install VMware tools on each guest OS.
