  • 1.  Shrink a Thick provisioned, lazily zeroed

I've moved a lot of folder from a vm disk to another one (same VM) now on the original disk I've shrinked the windows partition and there is a lot of "unused space" (more or less 400GB)

Is it possible to shrink the vmk ?

The only supported way of shrinking a VMDK is by using VMware Converter Standalone and selecting a different VMDK Size, you cannot use any other method. All detailed here: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1002019

If you're only using it to store files (unless it has high performance requirements) does it need to be thick provisioned?

IF not, just convert it to a Thin Provisioned disk, and reclaim the unused space. You can convert to a thin provisioned disk by simply storage migrating the VM to another Datastore and changing the disk type to Thin Provisioned
