  • 1.  Share SAN between 2 vSphere

    Hello.

I'm trying to migrate all data from one vSphere system A to system B.

    A: vCenter 4.1 Update 1 with ESX 4.1 Update 1

    B: vCenter 4.1 Update 1 with ESXi 4.1 Update 1

All hypervisors have permission to access the same SAN, which contains all VM data.

Is that possible and safe to remove VM from the old system and add it to the new one, one by one?

I don't want to lost my data.

    Thanks, and waiting your reply.

That's fine to do.  It sounds like you have the storage setup properly, but if not you'll just want to ensure that with your new hosts you just rescan your storage to recognize the existing datastores rather than using the Add Storage wizard.

If you're not using the same VM port group names then you'll need to munually update those as well.

the 2 system are separated except SAN.

I cannot vMotion that coz the vCenter is not same.

Is your management network seperated? If not you can disconnect a host with running VMs from the old vCenter, then join it to the new vCenter host.  Then you'll have the option to vMotion from ESX to ESXi

That it is why I was saying remove the host from the first vCenter and add it to the second vCenter instance.  I've done a disconnect and remove of several vSphere host with running workloads and never had any problems.    Either way would work so it's whatever you feel comfortable doing.

I think you could remove the current vSphere host from vCenter and add it to the second vCenter instance.  Then both vSphere instances would be under the same vCenter and you should be able to vMotion over to the second vSphere host if the cpu were compatible.
