    Hello,

    I work for a company that is developing a JAVA-based Web-Application.

We would like to sell the software in a precofingured VMWARE Image running Ubuntu Server as the OS.

The customer will have proper licensing to run VMWARE ESXi.

Is this possible without any additional costs for us and without breaching VMWARE licensing?

If it is not what kind of license would we have to purchase?

Any hint or explenation would be greatly appreciated!

    Best,

    Johannes

use evaluation version for 60 days and create your vm application package, export it into ovf/ova and sell it. But yes if you planning for a decent environment with more hosts in place then you should with license,

    1 vcenter license - standard

n no of host licenses based upon socket and cores.

Thank you for the prompt answer!

The ovf/ova idea is good - thank you - but why would I use the evaluation version if I can use the freely available test version.

We only have one host on which we want to create the VM Image, ship it and not use it at our site any further. Do we need a paid license for that or can we do that with the freely available one?

    Thank you,

    Johannes

If you just want to author & then roll it into an OVF then I don't see any reason why you can't do this through the latest version of vmare Workstation? Unless I am missing something.

no license for that I think but the only thing would be setting up your lab every 60 days. Also, I am not pretty sure about the laws, because Vmware provides evaluation version just for knowing the technology and testing and obviously not for making money using it freely. Maybe someone else here would have right answers regarding the terms and conditions with evaluation version.

    Thanks.

I just talked with VmWare hotline support and they told me that I need to be a VmWare partner in order to sell virtual machine images in the proprietary VmWare virtual machine format. The man from the hotline said that by selling the image I would be a reseller of VmWare Software.

Interesting. Hadn't expected that. I will have to go with the ODF suggestion from Joel.
