SAS Controller w/ external port

Does anyone know of a SAS controller with an external port which is compatible with ESXi 4.0? My Dell SAS 5/e controller, which worked fine with ESXi 3.5, isn't functioning correctly with ESXi 4.0. Thanks.

Take a look at the LSI MegaRAID SAS/SATA Feature Line.

I have also used an HP P800.

In another thread, someone mentions some adaptecs with far better performance, but I haven't used them or know if any are external.

Take a look at the SAS controllers HCL here. I've personally used the LSI SAS 3442E-R and it worked just fine. Another thing to note is that the HCL is being expanded as vendors continue to certify their devices, so I'd keep an eye out for updates to the HCL.

probably you can check whether mptsas driver is loaded in ESXi 4.0. mptsas is the driver which is used for SAS 5/E , IR controllers.

it was mptscsi_2xx.o in the case of ESX 3.5

you can check whether the driver is loaded or not by the command.

vmkload_mod -l | grep mptsas

Dell PERC 5/E is working under ESXi4.

If you have a Dell machine you can use PERC that are in HCL and works fine.

I've tried Dell Perc 5/i on both ESXi 4 / 5 and it hangs at boot (Loading scheduler...)
