  • 1.  Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge to Haswell VMotion questions

    Posted Jan 12, 2015 07:36 PM

Good morning. So we have a Lenovo RD630 with Sandy Bridge Processors (E2640), and we're looking at getting another server with either Ivy Bridge or Haswell processors (E2640-v2 and E2640-v3 respectively.) My question is, if we go with the Haswell, will we need EVC or will they Vmotion without it? What about Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge? Will those VMotion without EVC?  Any input is appreciated.

You will need enable EVC for both cases.

For more information about EVC, take a look here: VMware KB: Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support

So basically we'll need to set to Sandy Bridge on EVC?

Yes, since Sandy Bridge is the lowest EVC baseline.

You can use the CPU Compatibility Guide to Generate a EVC Matrix
