I don't have a personal server to run ESXi 6 on, is it possible to run it on a desktop or laptop?

Sorry in advance if I messed up anywhere in the post.

I would recommend creating nested environment using vmware workstation. will be very easy to setup.

since you will be using unsupported hardware to install ESXi OS, bare metal deployment is possible but might trouble you when it comes to finding right drivers for NIC etc..

Let's say your Laptop has got 8 or 16 GB ram with dual core CPU. and is installed with windows 7 OS, now install VMware workstation 10 or 11.

create a VM with 2 vCPUs and 4 GB memory with 1 vNIC and 10 GB virtual disk space, mount ESXi 6 iso with this VM's cd/dvd drive and power it on. It will boot and begin installation of ESXi 6 from that iso.

    Dear Tmacom,

As suggested by Narendra , Kindly use VMware Workstation 11 .
This is a Type 2 hypervisor which creates a container on your windows OS running on laptop for virtual infrastructure

Its like installing any other windows application

Currently VMware site is in maintenance mode, You can hover on Downloads TAB and click on workstation to download it.

    Regards,

    To CrashTheGooner and Narendra,

Would VM Player Pro 7 work instead of Workstation 11?

    Dear Tmacom

No Player Pro is belongs Horizon products , ideally we use it in Horizon Flex where we build golden image for provisioning VM's on a physical machine .
Player Pro is used to create our golden images on Windows client OS.

I hope I cleared your doubt :smileyhappy:
