  • 1.  Repairing XP Machine (BSOD) - Hang After CD Boot

    Posted Feb 02, 2011 05:24 PM

    Hello -

After my MBP had a recent crash, I've been unable to restart my Windows XP VM. I've found some excellent online discussions of the error that I seem to be encountering, in particular this one. After following each of these steps, I've been able to get to the standard Windows XP Professional Setup screen successfully.

When I try to follow step #11 in the above referenced guide - or when I simply press 'R' to get into Repair mode - the screen simply hangs while the notification bar states "Examining 25596 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on vmscsi..." - and it hangs there indefinitely. Here's a screenshot:

Does anyone have any tips as to how to get around this? I can't get into XP repair mode - any other way that I can run a disk recovery and fix this? I really don't want to have to reformat.

    Thanks!

It might be a problem with your physical hard disk. If yes, move your VM to some other location and kick off the installation again. I would suggest to run CHKDSK. Also try to start your repair option in saf mode.

    (or)

Have you checked the hard disks scsi ID?

Virtual device node should be configured as SCSI (0:0). If not, make it 0,0.

    Thanks,

    Ganesh

Thanks Ganesh - How would you suggest I move the VM to a different physical location?

If the VM is located in bad sector, it may be a cause of this problem. Thats the reason why i suggested you to move VM to some other location.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks,

can't you use a normal Windows LiveCD rather then the recovery console ?

it would be useful to see the disk in diskmanagement of a LiveCD and then run checkdsk eventually

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. There are two solutions: Attach the bad VM drive to another VM as secondary drive or boot the VM with the Knoppix CD. See message 1816390#1816390 in the VMware communities forum or check the knoppix web site:

    Hope this helps!

P.S. I know this post comes too late for you sftiger08, but it can help others...

    hi.

I know it may came up late for the one who make the thread but for us spectators, who read every progress, it is very important.  Learning from the link you shared help me realize things that should I do in the future if such problem will come my way.  Thanks for sharing it with us http://imagicon.info/cat/5-59/1.gif
