  • 1.  Renting VPS based on ESXi ?

    Hi.

Is it possible to rent VPS based on ESXi, not the free version, but an official/non-free/bought product like VMware vSphere 4.1 Essentials Kit or VMware vSphere 4.1 Essentials Plus Kit ???

I've read and understood that it was not possible with the free version, fine, but haven't see anything clear on this for the "official" version.

I also know some companies are already ESXi based servers, but I'm not able to know if they have done someting specific for this.

    Thx.

    Thanks for the answer.

    You write "Yes", that means:

1/ "Yes: you can rent VPS based on ESXi"

    or

2/ "Yes: you can rent VPS based on ESXi ONLY if you are a VSPP"

    ???

I'll to Windows and Linux VM's, based on ESXi, or Xen, or something else. So I'll have to buy Windows licensesfor the VM's, then ESX or Xen license.

I don't understand why I should be a VRPP, which has additional cost (approx $3k per VCP, and some other costs), as I've already bought license and support, and as I'm not renting ESXi itself, but virtual machines based on ESX.

    Thanks for your answers.

VSPP is the only (legal) way (that I know) to rent a VPS based on VMware.

Otherwise you must do hosting of customer's servers with their free ESXi or licensed version.

So, if I'm renting a physical machine, let's say a dual xeon at 100tb.com, then install my own ESXi, not free, with a real license, then can I rent virtual machines hosted by my physical server ?

This license policie is very very hard to understand, a nightmare...

Your best bet would be to contact someone at the VMware service provider program (i.e. the links provided earlier) to verify what the requirements are.

So I'll have to buy Windows licensesfor the VM's

To rent a Windows VM you have to be a member of Microsoft's service provider program. You can't rent regular licenses for Windows.

To rent a Windows VM you have to be a member of Microsoft's service provider program. You can't rent regular licenses for Windows

The name of this program is SPLA

You can contact company authorized on those programs, like Insight (for example).
