  • 1.  Renaming the Hard Disk in VM Settings?

Is it possible to rename the "name" of the virtual hard disks in the VM Guest Settings?

For example, when you add virtual hard disks, VMware defaults to something like:

    Hard Disk 1

    Hard Disk 2

    Hard Disk 3

    etc. etc.

Is there any way to add a label or something more meaningful so you know which one is which (otherwise you have to go into the guest OS and decipher some things)

The guest OS in this case is SLES11 SP1 64-bit, if it matters.

    We're using VMware ESXi 5.1

    Hi

Specifically within the edit settings area in VM properties i am not aware of.

The following KB details a number of options you do have to rename the vmdks to more meaningful names

    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1029513

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the info.  We don't really have issues with the .vmdk files themselves.

It's more when we need to expand/increase the size of the virtual disks for the Guest and you have like 5 or more that may be the same size, so you have to do some investigating as to which disk is what in the OS.

Vs. a physical machine, we'd know quite easily via our SAN tools since each LUN is different and/or the WWID # is different so it's very easy on the SAN to know which disk you're expanding, but not so much in VMware.

Would be a nice enhancement request, I guess.

For this reason I usually create all virtual disks with a slightly different size. This way it's easily possible to identify the correct vmdk.

I like your thinking. I too would second that request!
