  • 1.  Remote Desktop to VM closes immediately after connection

    Posted Feb 15, 2018 01:04 PM

    Hi,

Hopefully this is the right forum to ask this question..

I am having an issue where all users connecting to a particular guest experience the Remote Desktop closing immediately after initiating the connection.

Oddly enough this happens to all users, but does not happen on any other guests - where RDP works as expected.

No error messages are shown and the event logs within the guest see it as a 'log out'.

The strangest thing is, connection via the vsphere console is fine. I can log into windows here and use the VM as normal.

Up until a few weeks ago, there were no issues.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get around this, that would be great.

is this guest experience in its own/different resource pool?

    has vmware tools recently upgraded?

No and no, nothing different from any other guest as far as I can see.

have you tried using PCOIP protocol

have experienced similar issue and it turned out to be mismatch in the vmware tools and view client

I haven't, however being a work environment I don't believe I have the access to do so.

The vmware tools version is the same as other guests that I'm able to connect to with RDP.

you do have the right access to connect via RDP don't you?

are these view desktops or RDP server sessions?

Yes, have accessed this machine many times before. I also use the same account to access vsphere and log into the VM via the console there.

Additionally as others have the same issue, I'd suspect it's not permissions based.

I would also expect an error message?

I get past the 'Enter your credentials' window and the machine loads up to a black screen before closing completely.

This is an RDP server session.

re-install vmware tools using latest version has the windows OS done a recent update?

so its an existing server vw that worked fine and then has stopped working can you snapshot back to when it did work

our issues was a component of vmware tools so do a custom install not automated

Ok I Have completely uninstalled and reinstalled vmware tools, no luck with that.

Windows has not had any updates and the guest doesn't have access to the internet.

Unfortunately I have no snapshots as this is a test server. One I'd rather not start fresh with given the amount of config that has gone into the apps installed.

It seems I'm going to have to muddle through using the vSphere console rather than RDP.. very strange.

    Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

    Have you tried:

    Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Key path: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

    Value name: fDenyTSConnections

    Value type: REG_DWORD

    Value data: 0x0 (0)

This can protect the login from dropping out when policy is being refreshed (where you are relying on policy to set access to RDP)
