Rebooting vCenter MS SQL server within vCenter - affect

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help, I find myself in a position where I need to add additional RAM to my main DB server which also has the vCenter DB, to add additional RAM I need to power down the DB server (not got the ability to hot-add) which vCenter needs to run .... if I log into vCenter beforehand, power down the DB will vCenter allow my to add the additional RAM or will it nope out because it's DB is down? I'm sure I'm missing some easy solution to this but I was literally about to power down the DB server when this question hit me.

You want to connect directly to the hosts the vcenter and the sql server is on and shut them both down. You can increase the memory directly on the host.

Thanks for the quick reply, so I also have to power down the vCenter server? I ask because the DB server itself reboots automatically for MS patching quite often without us touching the vCenter server.

vcenter is likely to crash with the amount of time it takes you to do it, there is a timeout. Your patching was quick enough not to cause a problem, though I'd recommend making sure that the windows vcenter patch cycle is in the next patch group .I'd also suggest migrating to the vcenter appliance so you don't need to worry about this in the future, plus the windows vcenter isn't available past 6.7
