  • 1.  Random Reboots on HP DL380 G6

    Posted Mar 08, 2010 07:28 AM

    Hello community,

I recently installed ESXi 4.0 U1 Installable HP Customized ISO Image on an HP DL380 G6 and since then the entire server performs random reboots.

This happened before i even deploy any VMs on the server and still happening with VMs installed on the server.

The server has 1 E5520 CPU, 18GB of ram and 2x134GB SAS Disks configured on RAID 1.

SAS controller is a P410i with the extra 512MB of cache and the battery.

    Hyperthreating is active.

Power Performance HP Profile is set to Max Performance.

One dual port HP 4GBe FC HBA is installed on the server but currently not used.

4x Gigabit NICs are also installed.

    Bios is the latest P62

I have found some help online regarding this issue but no matter what i have tried it didn't help me.

I have upgraded all firmware on the server using Latest HP Firmeware CD 8.70.

I have downgraded the iLO Firmware from 1.81 to 1.79 and 1.78 but still that didn't help. I found 1.78 a bit more stable with less random reboots than 1.81 but still the random reboots are there.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I had a problem like this and it turned out to be a faulty batch of DL380's from HP. I had HP replace the whole server.

Below is a HP doc explaining the problem.

    Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply lanTech however i have read that Advisory.

My Server S/N is different than the one on the advisory. I am on XXX945XXXX.

But anyway i tried running that resolution and updating the System Programmable Logic Device was not available for upgrading on my system. For some reason it a firwmware was not available on my Firmware CD even if i manually download that file and placed it on my Bootable USB that had all the HP firmware.

Is the server rebooting itself, or does the ESX hypervisor panic and crash causing the reboot?

If the first situation is the case, do you have HP System Insight Manager that can display any alerts being sent from the system? Maybe a CPU fan is bad and causing the system to overheat and then shut itself down, ect. Also, possible bad memory or other hardware issues.

If the second is the case, check the logs for any error messages prior to reboot that can shed some more details.

Run a full diagnostics with HP Smartstart CD, if nothing fails, run memtest for atleast 24 hours: http://www.memtest.org/

Full diagnostics with HP SmartStart CD showed nothing. All tests were performed just fine with no errors/problems reported.

However i run memtest86 two times.

    1) First try almost immediately after the test start rebooted the server.

    2) Second try took a bit more around 10% of global pass.

I guess this shows that there is something wrong with one or more memory sticks.

I have removed all 3x2GB sticks from the server and see how it goes with only the 3x4GB sticks.

    Hi,

definitely your issue is a memory issue.

One o more sticks are broken. This is the cause of the random reboots.

You can try with a few memory sticks and check it with a tool like memtest.

If this memory is ok then add more sticks and check again until you find the offending memory stick(s).

Additionally you are using the P400i disk controller. Better check this.
