  • 1.  RAID (AMD SP5100) on supermicro H8SGL for ESXi 5

    Hello all,

I have a machine based on a  Supermicro H8SGL -F  motherboard. It has an Adaptec RAID chipset, identified as an AMD part.. AMD SP5100).
    http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron6000/SR56x0/H8SGL-F.cfm

The storage processor shows up in VMware's HCL (http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=base&deviceCategory=io)

More info on the chip: http://www.enterprisestorageforum.com/continuity/news/article.php/3855196/AMD-Does-RAID-On-a-Chip.htm

I've made a RAID-10 array by doing a Quick Init on the Adaptec RAID BIOS.

Upon booting an ESXi 5 install disc, ESXi 5 sees the hard drives behind the RAID as separate, JBOD disks.

It seems that with firmware RAID like in this case, it's up to drivers on each OS to recognize the RAID configuration and carry that through.

To me, it follows then that there's a problem with that process here.

What would be the next step from here, to enable ESXi to see my RAID array and not just the separate disks?

    Hello all,

it seems that nobody from VMware is having a look at the community forums, which is really annoying.

I'm having the exact same issue with an Asus KCMA-D8 Mainboard with the AMD SP5100 chipset.

Since the chip is listed in the HCL, even with the special addition RAID mode, I expect VMware to be able to install to such a RAID. I've tried RAID 5 and RAID 10 with my four 1,5 TB Seagate hard disks, but in all cases, ESXi 5.0 update01 only sees 4 single disks.

Who is gonna solve this issue? I've only bought this board due to the VMware compatibility list.

    Regards

    René

After reading the HCL again and again, I came to the conclusion, that it means that you can use the disks, even when the controller runs in RAID mode. It doesn't say, that VMware is able to use the RAID unit. I bought an additional Adaptec controller that is working now, but it is really a mess, that the HCL is such misleading.
