Is there any problems with converting a physical machine while it's still a member of the domain? The way I read this documentation I have, the virtual server will have the same name as the physical server, and there will be a short time while both exist. I didn't know if this would cause any naming conflicts in AD.

Sorry if this is rudemantery to y'all. I just want to be sure I have a full understanding of this before I begin.

There isn't a problem and (under normal circumstances) they won't be online at the same time.

make note that the MAC address of your physical machine will change to a MAC address that represents a vmware vendor. This means anything binded to a MAC address will break as a virtual machine. Static IPs will be replaced with the default DHCP addressing as this is normal when you "replace" a NIC in a physical machine.

Other then that you should be fine as long as you do not power the 2 machines up at the same time (conflicts in name resolution etc). You could always choose to not auto-power on the machine after a conversion and before powering it on manually - simply remove the NIC from the settings of the VM. This would allow you to power it on without networking to ensure it has been converted successully.
