  • 1.  OVF template and OVF file

    Posted Jun 19, 2023 03:32 AM

Please tell me the difference between OVF template and OVF file.

Exporting a virtual OS using ovftool creates an OVF file.

Using Export to OVF from Vcenter's GUI creates an OVF template.

I don't really understand the difference between these two files.

    Any information welcome

You can basically use both of them for the same purpose. Difference is only (as far my understanding) as one is a bunch of items the other is a single file.  An OVF is some items in a single folder. Like .ovf, .mf, vmdk . An OVA templated is a single file.

    Hi !  BivasM

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I know the difference between OVF and OVA,

I think templates are compressed. it will occupy less space at disk at actual cost. not sure though.

       Hi,

They are both compressed. But the difference is:

OVF Templates: They exist in vCenter. Exporting OVF templates allows you to create virtual appliances that other users can import later. You can use the export function to distribute pre-installed software as a virtual appliance or to distribute template virtual machines to users.

OVF/OFA File: You can make the OVF or OVA file available to users who cannot access your vCenter Server inventory.

Please give kudos if you think this was helpful. Thanks in advance!
