  • 1.  NVIDIA Tesla P4 Passthrough Not capable

    Posted Jun 23, 2023 09:58 AM

    Hi Communitie,

I am facing an issue with an ESXi ( 7.0 Update 3 ) and the passthrough of a GPU card (NVIDIA Tesla P4).

drivers are installed on the host and it has been rebooted several times. unfortunately, the Tesla P4 is marked as "not capable" in Passthrough, which should not be the case according to the compatibility list.

Does anyone here have an idea? I have also changed the graphics to "direct" via Vcenter. The card is also recognized correctly but I can't activate the "Passthough mode".

i am grateful for any tip

I think you must decide if you want use "PCI Passthrough" with that card or you want to use vGPU with the drivers...

Try to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers from the Host, perhaps then it is possible to use the card for PCI Passthrough.

I'm using this card here in vGPU Mode, then the card can serve 4 VM's at one time. For that mode you need to use the NVIDIA drivers on the host.

These cards are very specific about requirements.
What is your host server? have you confirmed that the host and the BIOS supports the card?

I would also look at the NVIDIA site that have some very good detail on getting these to run.

Take a look at the NVIDIA docs, but this might start you off.
    https://docs.nvidia.com/vgpu/11.0/pdf/grid-vgpu-release-notes-vmware-vsphere.pdf

You will also require a license server to deliver GRID licensing to the desktops.

You could raise a GS ticket with VMware to support you here too.
