Using VMware converter I migrated an NT4 box to a virtual server. However, I am unable to install the vmware network adapter in the NT4 virtual machine. The VMware tools will not install the adapter and I see no vmxnet folder under the VMware tools folder on the NT4 box from which to manually install the adapter. What am I missing?

Have you first configured the AMD PCNet Lance adapter in the guest?

First, all existing adapters and drivers should be removed from within the NT4 VM (Network Neighborhood -> Properties -> Adapters) and then the VM powered down. Next, right-click the VM from within the VI Client, and select Edit Settings. Highlight the Network Adapter, click on the Remove button and click on OK. Power up the VM and log in to Windows.

Power down the VM. Right-click the VM from within the VI Client, and select Edit Settings. Click on the Add... button, select Ethernet Adapter and click Next. Select the network label and check the box to connect the card at power on. Click Next and then Finish.

Power back on the VM. Go to Network Neighborhood -> Properties -> Adapters and click the Add... button to add an adapter. Select AMD PCNet Family in the list. NT4 will ask for the NT installation CD, or location of the i386 directory. Insert the CD or browse to the location that contains the installation files to complete the installation of the adapter drivers. Reboot the VM.

It is recommended that you reapply servicepack sp6a before the final reboot (for best practices).

First, thank you for your reply to my post. In following your instructions I encounter a problem when I load the NT Server cd-rom. I get the error message: "noncrital error - unable to open file, pcnet.hlp and amddlg.dll". When I do a search on the NT server cd-rom I do not even see these files listed. Is there another source where I can obtain this driver?

After doing some more digging on Google I found this Vmware documentation that resolved my issue:

1 Power on the virtual machine.

2 While Windows NT is booting, insert the Windows NT 4.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive.

3 Log on to Windows NT and install the AMD PCNET driver:

a Open the Network properties page by double-clicking the Network icon in Control Panel. Change to the Network Adapters screen by clicking the Adapters tab.

b Click the Add button and select the AMD PCNET Family Ethernet Adapter from the list.

c A message pops up prompting you to enter a path for the Windows NT files. Specify the \i386 folder on the CD in the path you enter (for example, type D:\i386 if the CD is in drive D) and click Continue.

d Windows NT setup prompts you for the Windows NT files again. Click Continue.

e Use the default adapter settings; they do not need to be changed. Windows NT setup prompts you again for a path to the Windows NT files. Click Continue to finish installing the driver.
