  • 1.  Need help with: FAILED: Unable to extract the OVA file........

    Posted Sep 30, 2009 07:56 AM

I had a setup on a DL380 with ESX 3i on it. Several virtual machines including one SBS2008.

I used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to export all my virtual machines to an OVA file.

Expended my RAID setup with additional drives and remake a new RAID setup.

Installed ESX 4i on and configure the appropiate settings for network and password.

Run VMware vCenter Converter again to upload the OVA file back to my ESXi platform, but i receive the following error:

FAILED: Unable to extract the OVA file....

Anyone who could help me with this issue. I need to solve this as fast as possible.

Can you post the log file from Converter?

I have attached the log files wich are exported with vCenter Converter.

I also tried in a desperate act to re-install my ESX server with ESX 3i, but this doesn't change a thing.

Hopefully you understand the log file, because i don,t :smileysad:

So ESX 3i installation wasn't the solution, so i installed ESX 4i again.

I started the vSpehere Client and looked under File and saw something like Deploy OVF Template

I started this and you could select a OVA file and finished it. The task Deploy OVF template is running right now and it is already up to 3%.

Don't know if this will work or maybe i am getting happy for nothing, but in my eyes as far as i can see is this looking good. At least he is doing something.

And while i was typing it gave me an error :smileysad: Sjees, thats a real bummer.

I now got an error: Unable to read file C:\.........vmdk. Can't find recognizable numbers. (or something like this, i needed to translate)

    So still need your help!

Converter needs to extract the OVA file (which is basically a tarball with a few extra files). If you deploy from OVF, then it extracts directly to ESX and does a VMKFSTOOLS -i (I think) to perform the deployment.

I tried to extract one small one and 7zip is extracting it to a VMDK file. I am currently copying the file as in backup wich gave me the error.

This "Test" file i then will extract. I will give a party if that works. I will let you know as soon as possible.

I wonder why you use ova in the first place ?

IMHO you are better off with zipping the VM-directory yourself - then you at least have a good vmx file along with the vmdks stored in the archive

As you can see, it is having trouble extracting the vmdk files. Looks like the OVA might be corrupt...as the conversion is taking place check the temp directory listed above and see what vmdk files are listed.
