  • 1.  Need help with ESXi 5 installation - No Network Adapters found...

    Posted Sep 28, 2011 02:30 PM

    Hi Vmware community:

This is my first post and exposure to Vmware ESXi - I purchased a new desktop computer with the hope of running ESXi 5. However, I have run into a snag. The installation stops at "No Network Adapters"--At this point I can't continue and have to reboot the system-- I downloaded an older version (ESXi 4), but got the same results... (no network adapters).

I have attached screen shots also...

Is there a driver available for this type of NIC card or an existing compatible driver that can be added to the installation?

The physical specs for my system are:

    - AMD Athlon II 170u processor, 4GB DDR3 memory, Sata 320GB HDD, Sata DVD drive, Integrated LAN 10/100/1000...

    PCI/ID information:

Bridge Bridge : nVidia Corp MCP61 Ethernet

    Class 0680: 10de:03ef

IDE interface Mass Storage controller : nVidia Corp MCP61 Sata controller (vmhba0)

    Class 0101: 10de:03f6

IDE interface Mass Storage controller : nVidia Corp MCP61 Sata controller (vmhba1)

    Class 0101: 10de:03f6

Thanks in advance for your help.

This site has a driver for an earlier version.  You may be able to make it work for you.

Often the inbuilt NIC's for whitebox server do not work. The cheapest 1GB NIC I found to get around this issue is the Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter. These work perfectly fine for a home lab and are standard PCI cards. You can get them extremely cheap on Ebay.

Thanks for the replies to this post - the OEM's user documentation was very generic and not specific to my model - when I sought help from the OEM, which only provided email support, they kept referring me back to their "not so helful" document. I ended up returning the computer and purchasing a Compaq desktop and a separate Intel  PCI 1 GB NIC. I was successful with the new computer and got ESXi 5 installed.
