Ok, downloaded vsphere hypervisor free version for evaluation.  The iso file I downloaded is

    "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0.update02-502767.x86_64.iso".

I know my hardware etc. is all compatible. I have a dell server.

I have basic idea what needs to be done however I am not able to find relevent document or instuctions for following tasks.

    1. Make a bootable USB with above iso file, so I can boot my dell server off the USB
    2. Install the vsphere hypervisor. Now i am not sure if this is going to be interactive or script based or what. The instructions i read are all mixed and there are several versions of the vsphere which makes it more complex.
    3. Once done installing, I want to create Virtual machines and run Guest OS (Linux) on them.

    Thanks guys for your help.

Firstly, the file you have obtained is a major revision behind. I would start by going out for the current.

    For your questions:

1: I use this guide: http://www.ivobeerens.nl/2011/09/17/create-a-bootable-vmware-esxi-5-usb-stick-in-windows-and-perform-a-scripted-installation/ just stop at step 3 so you don't bother making a scripted installation

2: Just boot it and follow the prompts. It will be interactive.

3: We'll cross that bridge when we come to it :smileyhappy:

    Hi Josh,

Thanks for the reply. The free vsphere hypervisor version i downloaded because that's the only one I could find from the download page. I will check again if there is a latest version which is also free and compatible to my hardware specs. I have Dell R210 II server with intel xeon e312xx.

I will try the link you suggested.

    Thanks

    Hi Josh,

Thanks for the instructions. I followed it and it worked just perfectly!

I now have vsphere 5.0 U1 installed on the host. what's next for configuring the virtual machines?

I configured basic networking and the host is on network and i can ping it. However, I can't connect to this host IP from my laptop using Chrome browser or even vsphere client?

I basically want to create couple of virtual machines on this host now and want these virtual machines to run RHEL as guest OS.

    Thanks

    Welcome to the Community,

just a quick question. Why don't you just burn a CD from the ISO image and install the ESXi interactively from this CD? Once the host is installed, you need to install the vSphere Client on a Windows system to manage the host.

Btw.: Please keep in mind that ESXi is a bare metal Hypervisor and will wipe the complete installation disk when you install it!

    Thanks Andre for the reply.

I would have burned the CD/DVD however the dell server I am using is a rack mount and doesnt have CD/DVD drive. so my only option is USB drive.

    Thanks
