    Hi

I installed this and it works quite well. The english is poor and some words need

translating because I'm not sure what they mean.

    Also:

the root password does not seem to work

the instructions do not tell you that the admin login name is root. I assumed admin or administrator and only later tried root :smileyhappy:

The management interface at first seems a bit cockeyed and non-intuitive - however after finding a few things I think it is still non-intuitive but is not cockeyed. It could do with some doco or more links to get to places.

For example - to add a domain you need to select an administrator first. That makes sense if you are managing multiple organisations. however for the

super superuser it makes sense to be able to see a summary of all domains

    etc.

    overall a great effort.

( help with the root password (mitea_test does not work) would be appreciated)

    Hi,

I agree with your views on this product, but its a damn good spam defender!

hehe anyway, your question about the root password, I had the same issue. I think you will find that your keyboard configuration is differen't to that of the VM's so as i found the root password on your keyboard will not be mitea_test it will be: mitea?test

Try it, I think it should work then :smileyhappy:

    Hope it helps!

To change the keymap to something else, login as root:

    user - root

    pass - mitea_test

(you might need to type in mitea?test due to the keymapping - type in the password at the username prompt so you can see what you're typing).

    Once logged in, type in:

    dpkg-reconfigure console-data

choose "Select keymap from arch list"

and then follow along.... qwerty -> standard -> US American -> standard

Or, select whatever type of keymapping you prefer...

I have an e-mail server and haven't yet installed this VM. Is it painless to direct incoming mail to the Mitea MailDefender, then have it forward to a separate mail server? One of the earlier comments has me a bit concerned.

  • 10.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 22, 2006 05:19 PM

The best way to set this up would be:

Adjust your MX record for the domain to point to the Mitea Maildefender VM.

On Mitea, you create domains, and a transport target (which is the IP/host of the target mail server). Once Mitea scans and processes the mail, depending on how your filtering is setup (default is that ONLY non-SPAM gets forwarded), it will be passed along to the mail transport.

Mitea has 3 levels of spam:

    Non-SPAM

    Possible SPAM

    Definite SPAM

By default, only the Non-SPAM (messages with a green light) will be forwarded. However, you can adjust the rules, and even the scoring. These can also be adjusted by recipient (setup users WITHIN a domain, not via the /admin).

  • 11.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 24, 2006 01:47 PM

How did you guys get it to run anyway...?

When go through the setup and I provided my domain:

    domain name: domain.com

    transport name: 172.16.0.7

    I get the following error:

Mail transport field is not correct[/b]

You cant proceed because you need to fullfil some of the field, please go back and fill the missing.[/b]

Am I right to provide the ip-address of my internal mailserver in the mailtransport field...?

  • 12.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 24, 2006 06:53 PM

what to put in mailtransport field?

  • 13.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 24, 2006 08:42 PM

The mail transport field = the target host(name or IP) of the mail server that actually receives mail for the domain

Remember, the way it's working - Mitea MailDefender is INTERCEPTING mail that should go to the Transport... So, Mitea scans it, but then must send it to the transport (which is where YOUR SMTP server is running).

  • 14.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 24, 2006 08:40 PM

Maybe it can't resolve the IP address of the internal mail server?

How is the VM setup? NAT/Host/Bridged?

Is there any firewall between the VM and the Mail Server?

  • 15.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 25, 2006 06:59 AM

Well, I seems that when I skipped the wizard and configured everything myself, it accepted the mailtransport value...I was running in bridged mode. mitea can telnet and ping my mailserver, so connectivity was no problem..

Some translation things I came accross that might need changing:

    Search criteries

    should be

    Search criterias[/b]

No mails has arrived to your inbox jet

    should be

No mails has arrived to your inbox yet[/b]

    Contact Informations

    should be

    Contact Information[/b]

    Question:[/b]

Once you have created your domains and a admin, you login with that admin. That admin can also create users in a domain[/b]...

do you need to create all the users you have in your domain?

If so, what is the function of creating these users..?

Doesn't Mitea simply forward mail to your mailserver and let the mailserver worry about if the address exists...? This is a hole in my understanding of Mitea so my apologies up front for asking this :smileyhappy:

I also so the feature list for the next realease..looks really nice..!

  • 16.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 25, 2006 09:57 AM

You do not need to create all the users in the domain. (If I understand correctly, you just need to create users to offer them the ability to login and "release" mail if something is blocked as SPAM.)

  • 17.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 25, 2006 11:21 AM

If I remember correctly, I added a user once I was logged in as admin for my domain but I did not have to enter a password...so do added users login without a password...?

  • 18.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Aug 25, 2006 01:38 PM

From what I tried - it looks as though adding users simply allows for having customized rules/whitelists/blacklists for that particular account.

For example, I can add an abuse@domain.com and tell it to allow all messages through by assigning it its own filter. Or, I can setup a sales@domain.com and make sure that all mail goes through to it. If I know one user receives jokes from a particular list, I can first add their e-mail account, and then add that joke list to a whitelist, but only for them (maybe it annoys everyone else).

I don't think it's like the SpamVigilante machine where the users do get their own logins and password on the spam filter to manage themselves.

    Many thanks...!

  • 24.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

I can see the cron job that updates virus definitions. However, are any other spam updates going on? I don't see any cron job that update spamassassin rules (i.e. Rules du Jour).

Also, is there a plan to implement a bayesian filter? Or the ability to send mail that PASSED (but was SPAM), to Razor/Pyzor? We do get some mail that passes through, however, it is definitely SPAM, and we don't know what to do to prevent future occurances.

Other than that - this is an excellent solution. So far, it's doing as great a job as the Barracuda hardware solution we have in place.

Noticed a few issues? during "spamassassin --lint -D":

\[8855] dbg: diag: module not installed: Mail::SPF::Query ('require' failed)

\[8855] dbg: diag: module not installed: IP::Country::Fast ('require' failed)

\[8855] dbg: diag: module not installed: Net::Ident ('require' failed)

\[8855] dbg: diag: module not installed: IO::Socket::INET6 ('require' failed)

\[8855] dbg: diag: module not installed: IO::Socket::SSL ('require' failed)

I was able to go ahead and install Mail::SPF::Query, IP::Country::Fast

However, the others fail during installation... Not worried about it since Mitea is working. Anyway, just thought I would bring it up.

    Also - feature request:

Show the results of spamassassin in the admin/user interface... It would be nice to see why the message scored the way it did. Also, it would allow us to adjust some scoring rules if need be.

    I'm seeing a lot of set_rtc_mmss: can't update from 0 to 59 messages[/b]

Has anyone else seen these messages on the console screen...?

Also, I don't know if you need NTP if you installed the vmware tools inside your VM. (I ran the vmware-config-tools.pl and got an error about that gcc 4.0.3 was used to compile the curren version and the gcc that was installed had version 4.0.4...after that it sorta runs in a loop.

There was a post a while ago on one of the VMWare forums. The way FreeBSD keeps track of cycles is different than other OSs, here is the information I got previously that worked:

If you disable APIC (SMP Support, no big deal as long as you aren't running it as a virtual SMP machine) this problem goes away. There is something weird in the APIC code that freaks it out.

To disable APIC you need to add "hint.apic.0.disabled=1" (no quotes) to the bottom of /boot/loader.conf and restart. This should fix the system clock issue.

Love this product, but have some big issues with the time and date service, NTP here just doesn't work. The time is always wrong and seems to go at a really slow pace, around 2 mins very hour according to the admin page. Mail is taking an age (6 hours) to come through and I wonder if this is down to the NTP problem.

Is there a way to disable the time checking and just set the date and time to now?

    Cheers

I agree : good product (80% spam filtered since a bit less than one week)...

but exactly the same trouble with NTP... time ALWAYS wrong

the only solution is to reboot the virtual machine and then date and time are correct since about 10mn (right now the console indicate "26-09-06 15:00" instead of "27-09-06 09:17" and we reboot the VM yesterday morning) !

does someone have a solution ??? could you please inform us how to disable NTP

    thanks in advance

  • 33.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Well,

One way would be to follow this guide:

    http://www.virtualistic.nl/archives/17

then edit your .vmx file to use the vmware tools to sync with the host.

    disable ntp

I already tried to reinstall the vmware tools but there's something "fishy" with the gcc compiler on the machine that interrupts the process.

I hope Mitea can sort this out...if he still reading this thread :smileywink:

https://ipaddress/admin is your system administrator account, if I remember corectly.

https://ipaddress is the domain admins that you create from the configuration page.

(Worse case, you should be able to login to /admin as root)

The mitea_test password doesn't work because of this issue.

    slettet = deleted

Kunder som har brugt for meget plads

Kunder som har fået slettet mails

Customers who have managed to delete mail's

Kunder som har for mange email kontier

Let's see. It wasn't so easy to set up. I did not realize that it firsts boots with a dynamic IP. Since I messed up the password a couple of times due to the _ ? issue the message to go to the http://dynamic_ip/admin to continue config had already scrolled by.

I didn't even have DHCP turned on my network at first.

I am getting so much more spam that I can't even sort through it. I already have 18 pages worth and it's only been 4 hours.

Before with Exchange I had 'Recipient Filtering' turned on so that if a user didn't exist I didn't get the email. Now I get email for every possible usernamecombo@mydomain.com this is 1000's more than I used to get. So I already have more of a problem.

How do I 'say bounce the email if the user doesn't exist.'???

Next I want to bounce the email if there is no sender name. How do I do that?

How do I black list an IP? Blacklisting only seems to be for emails not ip's.

Can I implement a RBL with this system?

Where can I get translations for some of the dialogs. How should I answer 'Er du sikker på du vil udføre denne kommando' Ja or Nej????

I like the interface and it seems much more usable than Spam Vigilante.

I have high hopes for this system.

    Thanks

You can find some answers here:

    http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/focus_spam_postfix

This is a spamfilter, you block ip's on your firewall.

I think you should focus more on SpamVigilante because it has Exchange integration, maildefender doesn't.

I don't know if Mitea is still following this thread...the best thing that could happen is a merge of spamvigilante and maildefender. I like the setup of spamvigilante and the options of maildefender..plus I know a little more about Debian than FreeBSD.

  • 44.  RE: Mitea MailDefender

    Posted Sep 29, 2006 03:10 PM

Ok... The problems I see with your points are that not everyone uses Exchange... I am reselling spam filtering and don't give a crap about Exchange integration. I don't give a crap about blocking ip's on my firewall. One customer may not want that ip blocked for their spam filter. MailDefender is an appliance. It is made to run by itself as an appliance and everything you are suggesting would backtrack and take that away. Stick with your Spam Vigilante. I personally didn't like Spam Vigilante due to the fact that you couldn't point mail to more than one server after it is filtered. It is made for a very narrow audience.

your claim on Spamvigilante "didn't like Spam Vigilante due to the fact that you couldn't point mail to more than one server after it is filtered. It is made for a very narrow audience.

    "

is incorrect. You defenately can redirect to more relay servers per domain specified. In page 8 i believe of the thread it is explained. Or ask Telacky, he is most responsive, and supporting.

(from memory i believe it was a matter of altering the transport mapping, and doing a postman reload)

I am speaking of from the interface provided from the appliance. I am not going to give a customer access to a shell account so they can point which domain they want their mail to go to. Mitea MailDefender allows this to be set from a webpage that is simple and easy to use. I can make computers do a lot of things.... How easily to where a customer can do it is another story.

I'm testing maildefender. So far I very much like the user interface and the functionality offered.

I'm having a problem with how much spam is being let through. Right now only about 33% of the spam is being trapped.

One thing I just did was upgrade the spamassassin package. I'll see if that helps.

Another mail server that I help administer uses RBLs, such as spamhaus, extensively and seems to have great success. I'm unable to determine if Amavis or Spamassasin is configured to use them. How can I tell?

I have had success adding the rulesdujour information to my spamassassin. I also added the OCR scanning package and it has seemed to help. I now get maybe 1 out of a 100 that actually get through. I feel these are pretty good odds. If you want to know more about adding any more of these let me know.

I've enabled rulesdujour. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just to make sure that I did everything correctly, I downloaded rulesdujour from http://sandgnat.com/rdj/rules_du_jour and my /etc/rulesdujour/config files looks like this:

    TRUSTED_RULESETS="TRIPWIRE SARE_ADULT SARE_OBFU0 SARE_OBFU1 SARE_URI0 SARE_URI1"

    MAIL_ADDRESS=myemailaddress

Have you used sa-update in an automated fashion? Do you see any reason why that may not work. I ran it and had it dump the new rules in /tmp. A fair bit are different.

I'm still trying to deconstruct how it fully works.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Hey Brian!

I'd love to have the detailed instructions for installing/updateing RulesDuJour and OCR. I can share the instructions for updating ClamAV if you'd like.

Also, does anyone have any idea how to reset the statistics?

    Hey Donald,

I am actually working closely with the Mitea developer team to improve the MailDefender 3.1 release. I am translating all areas that still need to be either translated or made easier to understand. I am also documenting the different areas of MailDefender that currently are there but not easy to find and manage. I have brought it to their attention that OCR and RulesDuJour are something that need to be in this release so I will keep you updated on the status of those. If those are not incorporated I will write a how-to that will describe how to fully incorporate those both into the filter. I am actually at the Consumer Electronics Show right now and am getting a lot of good ideas from the major Spam, Mal ware, and Phishing detection companies about what they see as being a problem. In speaking to a couple of the companies already it is surprising that they really have no clue about the new picture spam that is coming through so I feel that those of us that use MailDefender are going to have an edge on the rest. I told them that I pick up at least 75% of the spam that comes to my server without being so intensive that it blocks real e-mails and they had a hard time believing it. I will be visiting with Barracuda today and see what their take is on the SPAM appliance market. See if there are any other great ideas that I can suggest to Mitea. Sorry about the long post I just know there is a lot going on so I wanted everyone to know the latest.

    Brian:

This is awesome information and thank you for sharing! I was on working updating the language files to cleanup the user interface as well. There were other tweaks I was working on: more so for the system functionality, like ClamAV 0.88.7, a few errors finding files, clogged mail-queue, etc. I've worked with the Barracuda appliances before, while a network admin for a school district. Their products are quite amazing; but, the technologies are easily available as open-source, with the right configurations. The implementations of OCR and RulesDuJour and paramount for me. At one location my e-mail is forwarded over an alternative port 8025, which means I can't use RBL's...sigh. I hope to hear from you soon and perhaps help in development and deployment.

    Donald

P.S. I love the looks of your company, myself and a friend/former-co-worker are building an enterprise, we should talk sometime via e-mail, PM, etc!

OCR has been implemented into the latest beta release. I will check on the rules du jour. I am not sure as of yet what they are doing for updating their rules. The latest version has a lot of great features and it is laid out more clearly for setting up the filter for relaying outgoing mail. Another feature for outgoing mail is the ability to choose what port mail goes to on the server you are relaying your mail to. The status screen in the administrator interface allows you to manually update ClamAV and BitDefender definitions. Good for being able to check that the updates are downloading correctly and the latest version. You can manually block or unblock SSH and ICMP access. They also put a feature in that allows you to system wide reject, drop, or accept emails from a specific address. Those are just a few of the newer features of MailDefender and I will try to keep everyone posted as I find out newer features coming along. If anyone else has anything to add on any new features they have found let me know.

I have noticed those picture spam e-mails getting through the system so I implemented an OCR plugin for spamassassin that scans the picture and gives is a rating based on the words that are in the picture. I would recommend that this feature be incorporated into the next release.

    No flames, please...

Can anyone suggest an appliance for SOHO use that is truly a mail FILTER, and does not require a local mail server? One that I can configure to either proxy POP3, SMTP, and IMAP traffic or truly filter those ports transparently (if the appliance were to sit as a router/gateway between my client subnet and the internet mail servers)?

I haven't tried MailDefender or any of the other VMTN AV/AS appliances, because it sounds like they're all targeted for filtering between servers (just before your corporate mail servers).

Just asking. Any constructive pointers/URLs/etc are much appreciated!

Is that a general post, or a response to my question?

I'm trying to find an appliance that would do something like the FortiGate 60 or one of the Checkpoint SOHO appliances that have subscription svcs for email AV and AS filtering -- except their subscription prices are crazy, so something with Clam AV and SpamAssassin (or similar open-source, updatable), but allows me to continue to use standard, ISP-based mail-hosts and just filters on the way into my SOHO LAN.

I've been using Mitea for a while now and it works great. The only issue is that now, I can't recall if it worked before or not, but I'm not getting the '\{spam?}' in my headers one emails scored between 3 and 6. I tried a completely new install but it still doesn't seem to work. Has any one else run into this issue?

That has never worked for me either. Very strange. I thought it might have been from all of the changing I did to the system after I installed so I did a fresh install and it still didn't work. I think it has never worked now that you have said something about it.

How can I import the Mitea vmdk file to an ESX server?

    I've tried using the command:

    vmkfstools -i//.../maildefender.vmdk

but the import stops every time because the file is over 2gb (That is my conclusion).

    Does anyone have an idea?

VMWare States: "Some file systems (for example, VFAT or EXT2) cannot store files larger than 2GB. If you move an ESX Server virtual disk to such a file system, you must convert the disk to a multi-file format used by GSX Server and Workstation."

The tools you can use to move virtual disks include:

    • VMware VirtualCenter

    • VMware Management Interface

    • SCP

    • FTP

    • vmkfstools

For a more complete discussion on backing up ESX Server virtual machines, refer to http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1355.

    Thank you,

    This I already know.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to bring the Mitea 2.5GB file inside an ESX server VMFS.

I've tried using scp, ftp, and I've managed to copy the file.

The thing is that I don't see the vmdk file when I choose to use an existing Virtual disk (to create the VM).

The problem can only be resolved using vmkfstools -i command to import the vmdk file.

    Any thoughts on that?

    Thank you

I had this problem and simply migrated the installed mitea system onto a vmware disk the same size but using 2gb chunks. To do this I:

    1. created a new disk (using 2gb chunks

    2. added the disk to the mitea vmware profile as a second hard disk

    3. booted the current mitea system ( on a vmware server under windows)

    4. used the unix (oops i mean linux) dd command to duplicate the live disk onto the new disk

    5. shutdown mitea

    6. remove the original disk from the vmware profile

    7. made the new disk the main disk in the vmware profile

    8. booted the new mitea and smiled

it worked first time. good luck. hope this helps

How are people dealing with backscatter on this?

The MailDefender is set to relay to another Postfix based system, and decides to bounce mail for invalid recipients...

Also, tons of MAILER-DAEMON messages are coming in (forged/faked bounces/etc...) - currently have a script running every minute or so to delete them, but they pile up quick (a few thousand a minute)... Any method of dealing with these?

One thing I have done is to set the general rule to block for a domain and then make an exception rule for set e-mail addresses. Add each individual account that you have on the resulting domain and set those to accept e-mail. This way it never sends the e-mails to the server unless they are legitimate addresses.

    Posted Jan 19, 2007 05:09 AM

That actually is exactly what I have been thinking of the last few days. I am going to be bringing up to the development team about having possibly a "Backup MX" mode. A mode that could work together with another MailDefender system that would be the backup MX record for another MailDefender server. When the mode is activated it would catch and hold the mail for that domain checking for when the main server comes back online and then forward all those e-mails to the primary server when response returns. I know it is a product that someone who sells Spam Filtering service could also offer Backup MX services also. Its been on my mind tons... Right now you could use another server as a backup MX and it would forward the e-mail to the receiving domain upon completion. Hopefully that answers your question.

    Brian:

Thanks for the followup... I was thinking about implementing that, but wasn't sure whether or not the current version I'm running (3.0) supports dynamic e-mail addresses..

Right now, thanks to recipient delimiters (postfix), we can make up addresses on the fly (i.e. user-blahblah@domain.com resolves to user@domain.com).. I'm sure you're familiar with the recipient delimiter feature...

Anyway, that's where I get the problem...

We also use a Barracuda device for other domains, and the nice thing about that (probably the only nice thing) is that it verifies whether the user exists (listens to the reponse code) when it receives the message, and then does the scans and whatnot.

I haven't had the chance to download and play with 3.1 yet, but right now, I've had to setup the MailDefender to forward to the Barracuda which then hits the domain.. I would really like to eliminate the Barracuda alltogether.

I've been following the mitea.dk support site, but it's pretty much a bust with all the spam posts.

as you might have figured out by now: 90% of all appliances are NOT available at all. Nobody at VMWare will ever take care of your problems. A reason for this forum is to help VMWare to find workarounds and not helping the community. Nothing here or anywhere at vmware has a proper documentation. Most projects are abandoned. You waste time!

My suggestion is: forget about a prebuild vm, forget about support from vmware. download a vmware product that works for you somewhere (workstation and fusion are the only stable programs i heard of. ESXi,GSX and the other wild projects just run if you pay for customer support.) Install any Linux yourself and use a package manager to get a Mailserver with an understandable GUI.

e.g. has loads of GUIs that work rightaway with Postfix on any Linux.

You would waste more time asking in this forum, getting not working links from users and unqualified answers from the admins just finding the name of an appliance that might still be out there. DIY.

Also you could build ESXi yourself to get a system that doesnt crash on cool things like GigabitLAN,RAID2 and so on. (DamnSmallLinux and Sarge would do most you need :smileyhappy:

    Hi,

Downloaded and installed the VM. Looks very good to me, but after running the VM for about an hour or two, Apache stops working and the web interface cannot be reached anymore. Restarting Apache or the whole machine doesn't help. No errors in the Apache logfiles (only ClamAV messasges). Spam filtering keeps working, but there are no possibilities anymore for further configuration? Any ideas how to start the Apache server again?

    Thanks,
