migration from VDS to VSS

Hi

  I have a situation that, i have a two esxi5.5 host(1,2) part of cluster1 and two esxi 5.5 host(3,4) part of cluster2  all the 4 hosts are under same vcenter 5.5. The hosts 1(four nics),2(four nics) are part of VDS1 (vsphere distributed switch)and hots 3(four nics) part of VSS1(vsphere standard switch) and host 4(four nics) part of VSS2(vsphere standard switch).

I am looking for steps/procedure

1:-how to migrate the VM's from cluster 1(host1,host2) part VDS1 to cluster2(host3,host4) part of VSS1/VSS2?(with out taking any downtime or any packet loss to VM's).

Hi,

Can you 'borrow' an uplink from your VDS (if you have redundant uplinks)? Think for 5.5 this would work - (in 6.0 you can change networks during vMotion but don't think this was in 5.5 difficult to remember sometimes :-) )

E.g. 1. on hosts 1 and 2 create a new VSS with VM port group matching your existing one on host 3 and 4.

2. On hosts 1 and 2 manage physical network adapters for VDS - remove one of redundant uplinks.

3. On hosts 1 and 2 manage physical network adapters for VSS and add freed up uplink.

4. Edit VM settings and change network to port group on VSS (while online)

5. vMotion VM to host 3 or 4.

Is the vMotion network the same between the clusters?

     Yes, i can borrow uplink from VDS. But is there any option with out creating VSS on host1/host2?

  2:- Is the vMotion network the same between the clusters?

    Yes, it is same vlan.

3:- If a uplink is borrowed from VDS, do i have to create vm portgroup or vmkernel portgroup on any temp VDS/VSS?

1. No you'll need to migrate the VM network first.

2. That's good.

3. No, just the VM network - as long as connectivity exists between vmkernel and vMotion it shouldn't matter what switch they are on.
