  • 1.  Migrate from Distributed switch to Standard switch

    Hey everyone,

I will be changing from a vCenter appliance running distributed switches to a full vCenter on standard switching and want to know the best way to accomplish this task.

There is one ESXi host running the distributed switches.  I want to migrate everything to standard switches.  I have 4 pnics, and I have removed 2 of them from the distributed side and created a vswitch within the standard switch.  After I remover all the VMs I will need to remove the vmkernel port.

    Ths is the question:

I should be able to create a new vmkernel connection type within the standard vswitch; when I do this, how do I migrate the vmkernel on the distibuted switch to the standard switch?  Will it ask me, or is there a wizzard?

    Thanks for the Information,

    Matthew

    Matthew,

You can use the Migrate Virtual Machine Networking wizard on the Networking Inventory summary screen to move VMs both to and from portgroups on Distributed and Standard switches.

I am almost certain that you can use use the Manage Hosts (Right click on the Distributed Switch and select manage hosts) for the Distributed Switch to migrate vmks from the Distributed Switch to a Standard switch.  (See next reply for how to migrate vmk).

    Hope this helps.

    Matthew,

Just did a quick test.  You can migrate a vmk from a dvPortGroup to a Standard vSwitch.  Click on the Host in Host and Clusters, select Networking and vSphere Distributed Switch.  For the port group that the vmk is on select Manage Virtual Adapters.  Select the VMkernel from the list and select migrate.

The vmk can be migrated to any vSwitch on the host.
