  • 1.  Mgmt network ping test fails.....

    Posted Jan 21, 2013 11:37 PM

I have 2 esxi 5 U2 hosts just spun up. I set the management IP & DNS etc...

So when I go to do the "Test Management Network" thing from the console, the ping test for pinging the DNS name fails. The rest (DNS Servers & Router) work.

Now when I putty into the the host I can ping itself.....of course. I can ping all IP's.

Nest I added the entries to the hosts file.....

    192.168.0.100     servername.somethin.net servername

Usually works but not this time.

Niether the short name or the FQDN works.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

It is not recommended to add entries to the hosts file in ESXi. For your DNS, are you sure that you entered the correct address in the vmkernel DNS settings?

Can you ping the IP of the DNS server from inside the host through SSH?

    1. When you do a nslookup from a different machine to the ESX server, do you get the same IP you set for?

    2. Can you try to change the nic to another nic in network adapters just to confirm that the given nic is not in dns settings?

    3. Just confirm if the dns is having the entry of the server?

In addition to that make sure the you do not have any teaming options enabled for the management interface. Set the adapter to failover only and try to reach your default gateway and dns server using the vmking command from the esxi cli.

There's no Teaming of NIC's and I have moved the mgmt IP to different NIC's. I get the same result.

From putty (SSH), I can ping and vmkping all IP addresses and I can ping itself by the DNS name.

I can ping the other host's IP (mMgmt & VMotion IP's) as well as other VM & Devices on the network.

Now, technically there is supposed to be NO DNS in that specific "Network Zone". But I spun one up to test and it's still a no go. But that's a bandaide and not a fix.

I'm curious now on how it's actually pinging "Itself" when you do the "Test Management Network" from the console.

It's not making any sense to me......lol

My goal is to get these 2 hosts into a 2 node cluster.

    Thanks

OK, I got a little further. In the screen "Test Management Network", I backed out the FQDN and just left the server name in and the ping test works!!!

So I logged into the console and changed the DNS entries to not have the FQDN, saved the setting and tried the test again but the the test still shows the FQDN.

For some reason when I change the DNS setting from the console "DNS Configuration" it does not save the setting.

    Any ideas?

    /getting closer.....lol

I do hope that you have restarted management network once you changed the settings. Also, instead of changing in the file [which is not recommended], do try to change the same in Configuration-dns and routing.
