  • 1.  Memory Resources error on VM boot, only in vCenter

    Hey,

I'm having a lovely little issue with one of my VMs, and my google-fu is failing me.

Last week the VM (running server 2012) hard locked and needed to be reset, when trying to bring it back up I got a "The available memory resources in the parent pool are insufficient for the operation" error.

Eventually I got it back up and running by logging into the host and booting it from there, no error. I thought I was in the clear until my nightly backup ran and showed the server as being inaccessible, meaning my vCenter server was still seeing the server as being in an error state, even though the server was running and accessible. Now I'm back to square one with getting the error when trying to boot the VM.

    The rest of the info:

    • vCenter 6.5.0 build 16275158
    • VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 6765664
    • VM is running Server 2012 Standard
    • 128 GB RAM on host
      • 6 VMs using a total of 108 Gb
      • No VMs are using a reservation

    Stuff I've already tried:

    • Setting memory reservation
    • Removing memory reservation
    • Setting a resource pool
    • Removing a resource pool
    • Rebooting host
    • Rebooting vCenter
    • Booting only the problem VM
    • Reducing the VM's memory
    • Increasing the VM's memory (???)
    • Re-register VM in both vCenter and on host
    • Moving the VM to another host
    • Updating vCenter

I'm at a total loss on this one.

Only thing I could find in the log that MIGHT indicate an issue:

    2020-06-09T12:43:04.967Z| vmx| I125: OvhdMem: memsize 32768 MB VMK fixed 2769 pages var(mem) 529 pages var(cpu) 8 cbrcOverhead 0 pages total 19749 pages

    2020-06-09T12:43:04.967Z| vmx| I125: VMMEM: Maximum Reservation: 392MB (MainMem=32768MB) VMK=77MB

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi

Is this ESXi server belongs to the cluster ?

You might have admission control reservation set on the cluster level.

Parent pool points at insufficient resources at either host, resource pool or cluster level.

    Hey,

I actually didn't have the servers in a cluster, so I created one and fired them all in there. Once I did that, the issue went away. Also turns out the error on the backup was unrelated to the issue in vCenter.

Either way, it's all good now.

    Thanks for the tip!
