  • 1.  Maximum amount of Datacenter and Cluster per vCenter instance

I know most of the maximums and just been through the PDF as well .. There doesn't seem to be mentioning the maximum possible Datacenter or Cluster instances per standalone vCenter (unless I am blind lol)

Is there even a maximum ?

You missed the maximum's for Virtual Machines then.. And even then it's based upon the vCenter server. There is no MAX for cluster, only VM's. But I think there is a max for hosts PER cluster, which is 8 (or 16?). No limit on Datacenters.

Oh I did see those maximums .. 32 hosts per cluster and 100 Vms per host with less than 8 hosts and 3000 or so VMs per vcenter - so not too bad ..

I assumed that since there is no maximum noted there isn't none - just wanted to make sure :smileyhappy:

So are you that close you are worried? You must have a ton of VM's...

Nope but we are hosting and managing multiple cluster ourselves and intend to use a single vCenter server to manage the whole lot and we are just trying to avoid surprises ..

I think your best bet is to stick with the maximums around VM's per vCenter, If you go x64 you can get 3000. As Richard says, that should be your focus, not datacenters/clusters

The focus is already on vms per vCenter but we wanted to make sure we cover every angle ...

everything has it's limit. But if you want to know the max supported limit, you may have to contact VMware. I don't like the idea of having "all your eggs in one basket". Even linking two vCenter instances together, you can spread the load a bit.

Why is it important to get everything into one vCenter instance. The only thing I can think of is administration. But, again linked mode will help with that.

We are hosting partner and basically sell HA / DRS solutions but we normally manage those setups.

So we intend to have one virtual center in our datacenter which manages every customer's cluster in one place. But taking the amount of maximum VMs per hosts into consideration we probably wouldn't be able to have more than 80-100 cluster anyway which is enough anyway as not every cluster we sell is managed by us so customer normally have their own vCenter server,.
