  • 1.  Max number of users connected to a single VC?

    Posted Aug 20, 2007 03:09 PM

I have a very strange application for VC that I would like to implment for a client. I can certainly detail the application if anyone needs more information to answer the question, but, suffice to say, I forsee a situation where I could have many, many users connected to a VC at one time. The initial install would consist of a max 80 concurrent users, and I would like the ability to scale to around 200 concurrent users (in VC, utilizing a console connection to 80-200 different servers).

First question; is there a hard limit to the number of concurrent users that VC can support?

If not, is there a practical limitiation?

How well does VC scale; if I implement on a larger box (more procs/memory) will this help the situation?

Also, any advice about this course of action would be welcome; I would be very interested to hear what others have found when they have connected dozens of users to VC at one time.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I am pretty sure the maximum number of concurrent connections supported is 50 but I can't find where I saw that.

I would consider RDP or VNC if you are going to run up against this limitation.

    Here's the doc...

VirtualCenter Technical Best practices - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vc_technical_best.pdf

    Scalability

    • A single Management Server with minimum hardware requirements is recommended for supporting up to 20 concurrent client connections, 50 ESX/GSX Servers, & 1000 VMs.

    • Increasing the hardware requirement to dual CPUs and 3 Gb RAM can scale the Management Server to support up to 50 concurrent client connections, 100 ESX/GSX Servers & 2000 VMs.

You dont want to go above about 10, VC client even idle puts a massive strain on the infrastructure. I have a large VC infrastructure heavily above the design limits of esx hosts and gusets, and even one additional client causes a performance impact.

VC 2.5 should improve matters a lot, but you will have big problems with the design you are trying to implement.

    Thanks.

The document is dated June 2005.

Is there an updated doc? I can't seem to find this info:

    - Max #concurrent connection/users to VC 2.5

    - Max #concurrent connection/users to ESX 3.5

    Thanks

I have been searching for the same, but to no avail. However reading in other topics there seems to be an connection between RAM on VC and concurrent sessions.
