What do you mean by the source of VMTools.

VMWare Tools are part of the ESXi CD/Image and once you create a VM and install VMWare Tools in a freshly created VM you can access the tools from your CD/DVD drive as its mounted there. Most of the times VMWare tools starts installation automatically but if it does not then access your CD/DVD drive and run VMWare Tools from there.

In former versions of the ESX for example, the .iso files where stored in /vmimages/tools-isoimages.

If I understand you right the VMTools arn't stored on the ESXi. So I'd need the ESXi CD/DVD to install them.

What about when the ESXi is managed from a vCenter Server - where are the VMTools source come from when I click "Install VMTools"?
