  • 1.  Local VMs to Shared Storage

I have ESXi free license and create many production VMs in local dataStore of ESXi, we complete install vCenter server and add that host to it, complete the configuration of storage and connect the ESXi to it too, we get the new license of vSphere Enterprise plus.

Would someone tell me how to move those VMs from local datastore of ESXi to the shared storage we have without power off those machines, please?

    Best regards

With the Enterprise Plus license you can live migrate the VM's to a new storage. All you need to do to be able to use "Storage VMotion" is to make sure the ESXi host(s) have access to the shared storage. Take a look at e.g. http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/04/02/storage-vmotion-exploring-the-next-version-of-esxvcenter/ which has some screen shots how it works.

Once the hosts can access the shared storage, there's no need for downtime. The workload will continue to run on the same host, it's only the files which are copied to the new location. Once they are copied successfully, the VMKernel will switch over to the files on the shared storage and delete the old files on the local storage.
