Link aggregation problem with 2 Hosts

  • 1.  Link aggregation problem with 2 Hosts

    Hello,

    i have a esxi 5.0 environment with 2 hosts and 1 Qnap-storage.

When enabled link aggregation on the QNAP, only 1 host can connect to to iscsi-lun on the qnap.

The other is having a time-out to the qnap when connecting the 2nd cable into the switch.

I have trunked the network ports for the vmware-hosts and for the Qnap.

How can i fix this issue so that both hosts have link aggregation as well for the QNap?

    Thanks

Can you confirm you setup networking as explained in http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004048

    Hi Andre,

    i have configured link above.

    I am only using a d-link switch instead of HP/Cisco (D-LINK DGS-1100-16)

I have configured Port Trunking for both Vmware-hosts and the Qnap-storage.

Could the d-link be the problem?

I have configured a standard switch instead of a distributed-switch. Is that ok?

    Thanks!

Could the d-link be the problem?

Maybe yes. I took a quick look at the manual and from what I read, I think the switch only allows dynamic link aggregation whereas ESXi only supports static link aggregation.

    Hi Andre,

where did you find this in the manual?

Do you know the HP 1810G-8 is ok for this configuration?

See "L2 Features > Port Trunking" in the Manual (English) (page 22)

Do you know the HP 1810G-8 is ok for this configuration?

I don't know this model, but if it supports the settings mentioned in the KB article I posted earlier this may work.

    From the manual:

The Trunking function allows the switch to combine two or four ports together to increase bandwidth. Select the

Trunking Groups, choose the Members to be grouped together, and then click Apply to activate the selected Trunking Groups. Up to eight Trunking Groups may be created, each supporting up to four ports.

    Disable -

Removes all the members in this trunk group.

    Nothing about static/dynamic trunking?

You are right, but "... to increase bandwidth ..." implies that in my opinion. However, as I said, I think this could be the case but I'm not sure.

    What about this link :

    http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/support/product/dgs-1100-16-16-port-10-100-1000-easysmart-switch

    it says "static trunking"

    Is that what we need?

I have this 1810-8G in a lab for storage (iSCSI), it works without any issues using the HP trunking (Link Aggregation).

    Are you using vsphere 5.1?

Do you have a full configuraton of your environment with Dv-switches+portgroups for me?
