While having a look at the cluster limits, I have found that right from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 5.5, we have a cluster limit of 32 hosts per cluster. What is the reason for this constraint?
Hi SKNair,
It is due to lot of reasons. Here's an article by Scott Drummonds
Maximum Hosts Per Cluster « vPivot
Give it a read.
Hi Abhilash,
I read the article. Great post, It discusses at length on the pros and cons of having a cluster size set to small or large. So does the post from Duncan at URL http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2010/11/29/re-maximum-hosts-per-cluster-scott-drummonds/
Both the posts and comments therein do not answer my question on why the cluster host limit is still set max at 32.
I think its because of the complexity. I think the right guys who can answer this question are the technical team behind the Cluster technology in VMware. Even though it says 32 hosts are allowed. I have never seen people having more than 15 hosts in a cluster.
I have seen clusters with upto 26 hosts working without any issues. But why the limit has not changed from 32 since the days of 3.5 is the reason behind this query.
As per the blog, Technically it should be not a issue , going beyond 32 cluster. May be the use case is not much.
Still some VMware person need to confirm it.
