I need some explanation to IOPS and how is works. On my vmware host I have 6 x 450 gb SAS 10k drives in a raid 10 configuration. I have read from several sources that the theoretical IOPS per SAS 10k disk is ~150 IOPS and if I apply this to my Raid 10 configuration I get 450 IOPS.
When I do a storage VMOTION on a VM from my SAN to my local raid 10 storage VMWare reports an average write IOPS of 6000?! I know that there is a difference between sequential and random workloads but what is going on?
