  • 1.  Intel ET Quad Port Adapter

    How does the 4 ports on an Intel Gigabit ET Quad Port adapter show up to ESXi?

    Do they show up as individual Ethernet Nics or do they show up some other way.

    Im looking to add 4 ports to my ESXi machine.

    I have found out that i cannot use LACP fully in ESXi so my only other option is to direct connect my NAS units through their own nic on ESXi.

    So in summary, i need 4 Gigabit ports assigned to a VSwitch. Each will be assigned to a NAS unit. In this scenario, will the ET work as I think it does?

    FYI, I do not have and PCI-X slots available and only a single PCI-E 8x, Hence my choice of adapter.

    They'll show up individually.

    The NICs will show up as VMNIC2 - VMNIC5 if your server already has a dual port on-board nic which would be VMNIC0 & VMNIC1.

    You can put them in any vswitch you like. So they show up and individual nic ports.

    Can i change the names from VMNic1 to something more descriptive? Im curious since ive never tried. Thanks.

    Sorry.. this is the device name given by ESX.. it cannot be changed. The only thing you can change is the name of the VMKernel Port inside your vSwitch that you will create to connect your storage device.

    you can change their number but I never try to change their name completely.

    Hello,

    Did you use the latest driver for this NIC.

    Iif you just check it in the HCL, you will see that they will work (with some driver which comes with VMware by default) but some times there an update or driver for download via this link).

    • 4. Ixgbe version 1.3.56.7

    • 7. igb version 1.2.44.3

    • 8. igb version 1.3.19.12

    • 12. igb version 1.0.0
