  • 1.  Installing iLO on a VM

    Hello,

Is it possible to install an iLO on a VM? I'm thinking not as this is only available on a HP BIOS but if people have ideas I'd appreciate their thoughts.

The whole reason for doing this is that we need to remove anti-virus software to install Nice Sentinel software and we can't do this while this is on the LAN but if people have ideas on this I'd be happy to hear them.

    Thanks,

    David

The console in the vSphere client procides iLO like cuntionality - allows you to access the VM even if the network is disabled -

I can't really give the user access to the ESX/ESXi just for this 1 VM and I suppose I'm correct in stating I can't access the individual VM. I tried it just there and it's saying unable to connect to remote server.

I'm using ESXi 5.0 build 623860 in case that is relevant.

Method 1: You can provide access to single user using vCenter Webaccess in vSphere 4 environment and download VMRC plug-in so that VM console can be visible in IE.

    Method 2: Download vmware-vmrc.exe. URL: http://www.ntpro.nl/blog/archives/731-The-new-VMware-Remote-Console-VMware-VMRC.html

Follow instructions as per below URL http://amk1.wordpress.com/2009/08/26/generate-virtual-machine-shortcut-for-esxi-4/

I've done as you suggested specifying the passwords for the ESXi but I can't really give this person access to the whole ESX environment so I'd be looking for another way if possible.

ESXi but I can't really give this person access to the whole ESX environment so I'd be looking for another way if possible.

You can restrict the user access only to the VM operations by setting the roles and permissions in the VI client. This way you can restrict the user meddling with your ESX box

Is it possible with this just to grant user access to 1 machine while denying access to the rest or will you be giving access to all VMs.

No, I dont think you can restrict an users access to one particular virtual machine. the user privileges are not so defined. However, you can provide the user the remote control access like vmware-vmrc command to that particular virtual machine only instead of vsphere client access.

That way the user can power ops, remote control that particular vm only.

If interested, let me know, I can gather the syntax, else it should be easily googable.

I was following the instructions in comment 3 but as per comment 4 I had to specify the root user name and password.

I could also probably set up a new user on the ESXi but likewise I'd be giving access to whole ESXi. I know I only specify a vmx location but with this syntax you could very easily get access to the whole ESXi.

If I'm incorrect I'm open to correction.

Yes you are correct, you would end up giving access of ESX.
