    I have a windows server 2008 r2 already set up and don't want to lose that if possible.

    Is there a way to install hypervisor on this machine?

    I am total noob when it come to hypervisor and vmware in general.

    For production environment do you have two options:

    1 - install the Hyper-V role on the Windows Server and you don't lose nothing;

    2 - install the VMware ESXi on the server, but the installation will format the disks.

    if you want to keep the server you could just use vmware convertor en do a P2V to a workstation image

    install esxi hypervisor on the server en use vmware convertor to import into the esxi host.

    hope this helps

    I appreciate your inquiring about hypervisor and will be glad to assist you.

    If you already have a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 running it comes for free with a powerful Hypervisor  technology built in for free.

    Just go to Server Manager and add the Role Hyper-V. It takes no more than few seconds and you be able to start creating your own Virtual Machines.

    If you already have some VMware virtual machines running in another host server you could use Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (MSCVMM) to manage both, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines from a centralized point.

    I should clarify a more of the objective and maybe I don't really do anything.

    1. I have been using hyper-v, which I find cumbersome, but that's not really for the reason for switching.

    2. The reason for the switch is that I am creating the image/vm in a test environment and then I will be sending that to corporate where they are using vmware products.

    But for clarification:

    To set a vmware virtual server environment I would have to install ESXi server.

    When I explained point 2 to the customer service they told me that I would need to install hypervisor and that is what I was given.
