  • 1.  Install vCenter 8 - do I really need 400-500 GB disk?

    Posted Mar 01, 2023 03:47 PM

I´m using VMware workstation for a "Tiny" Lab - with only 4 servers 2 GB RAM each and with 60 GB without allocate 100 % disk.

    And only 1 windows client.

I recently upgrade my hardware host, so I can reach the prerequiset of 14 GB RAM. My host is a Windows 10 machine, 64 GB RAM

and has only 500 GB disk and 60 % has already been used.

Can i get around this peculiar prerequiset of 400-500 GB disk, becuse it a very small Lab. I dont really know why

VMware has this prerequiset of diskspace. I understand if it´s "Tiny" Lab for a large company, but for a fast test

by setting up a small private test Lab?

It´s a little peculiar prerequiset, as I see it.

    Really appreciate your answer.

    ,

You will not use that as a minimum, you can select Tiny and then Thin Provisioning as the deployment option. What I truly do not remember is if the wizard is going to let you go when you do not have that enough space even if it is Thin.

You could give it a try and see how it goes, for testing would be enough.

Ok, I´m used to install VMware 6.5.

    if I remember correctly.

Back in these days I´ve Installed Windows server and then installed vCenter

Then it was possible to configure more RAM and disk on the virtual machine in the VMware workstation than you had on the physical machine

This "8.0 way" of installing vCenter seems to detects the disk size of the physical machine.

With vSphere 8.0 you have to import an .ova- file (VM-appliance)

Now it looks like "Tiny" is hardcoded (Im hope I´m wrong) into the installation Wizard.

I cannot proceed with the installation. :0/

But "Tiny" is relative. In my profession at work "Tiny" is a Lab with some tetst in large company with >10.000 employee.

Then the requirements is logic, but as consultant I have to do some own test before I recommend my customer to do the Lab

    in their enviroenment.

So, the requierments "Tiny" is a little bit peculiar and not so applicable in reality.

But anyway - I´m gonna give it a new try as you suggest.

I was wrong in the previous post regarding the requirements

"Tiny" - RAM is only the requiered parameter.

But this is what happends when you import vCenter 8.0 .ovf-file i VMware workstation.

A lot of disks in different sizes with no allocated disk spaces.

I dont remember I had these sort of fenomen in vSpshere 6.5?

    Please see screenshot.

    Really appreciate your answer

That looks absolutely normal for a deployment in VMware Workstation.

In my Workstation lab it looks like this:

Ok, I´ve never thought about it, because my last experience of setting up a VMware enviroment was with 6.5.

I have a feeling it was just an extra disk back in those days?

    But anyway, thanks

The partitioning indeed changed quite a bit.
This multi-disk design makes it much easier to maintain the application, and to resize single virtual disks if required.
