  • 1.  Increase C drive Disk Space

    Posted May 06, 2019 10:15 AM

    Hi ,

    I have 100GB Disk0 and made two partition C drive =100GB and D Drive =100 GB.

I increased Disk0 to 150GB, Now I want to increase disk space of C drive But the extend option greyed out. I am able to extend D drive without any issue.

Please let me know if anyone knows the solution.

    Regards,

    Welcome to the Community,

partitions can usually only be expanded with adjacent free disk space, that's why you see this option only for the D: partition.

One option is to use a partitioning tool (e.g. gParted) to move the D: partition to the end of the disk, so that the free disk space is adjacent to the C: drive.

Another option would be to use e.g. the VMware Converter, and convert the existing VM, so that the target has two virtual disks. This way it will be easy to expand drives in the future.

    Hello,

"The reason is that you can extend a partition in Disk Management only condition that there is adjacent unallocated space. Simply say, if you want to extend C drive, you must make sure that the unallocated space is behind the C drive. In other words, if there is no unallocated space or the unallocated space is not contiguous to the C drive, the extend volume will show grayed out and stops working"

To fix, you can use many partition management tool. But as workaround, create the drive from the extra 50 GB called it E:, Copy data from D: to new drive E:, Format/Delete the D: and now extend the C: drive.
