  • 1.  Incorrect datastore provisioned space in vCenter.

After evacuating a datastore (0 VM / 0 file), vCenter still reports 350GB provisioned. Capacity and Used are correct.

It is similar in both web clients and PowerCLI.

I of course spammed the refresh button.

I looked at each host individually in PowerCLI and they report the correct provisioned space (0GB).

I found this KB that was not helpful.

    What am I missing?

Can you please help me understand the issue by answering the questions below:

    1. What is the Esxi Host and vCetner Version that you are using ?

    2. Are you using Thin Provisioned Storage ?

Please refer to the Below Article if you are using NFS Datastore:

    VMware Knowledge Base

If you are viewing the Allocated Space in Home>Inventory> Datastore and Datastore Clusters under the Hosts and Clusters tab, you see incorrect information.

The value shown in the Allocated Space is currently showing as per

Allocated Space = (lun 1 + lun 2 + lun 3.....+ lun n) * (number of Hosts in the Cluster)

If you are using Thin Provisioned Disk please check the Article Below, if this is the reason why this is happening.

    VMware Knowledge Base

Please let me know if this is helpful.

    Thank you for your input.

    1. ESXi 6.5 U2 and U3 - vCenter 6.5U1

    2. The datastore mentioned has no VM and no file on it.

    No NFS -> VMFS

When I said each host sees the right size, I meant I connected directly to the hosts using powerCLI and checked the provisioned space. Those were ok, vCenter was incorrect.

I noticed at Day+1 that vCenter reports the correct provisioned space again (<1GB). So my assumption is that the datastore provisioned space is a metric processed by vCenter at regular intervals and not in real time. Though I couldn't find anything to back this theory.

VROPS seems to report the correct provisioned space at the right timestamps. Strange...
