  • 1.  Identify update version from build number

    Hi

    I have a esxi 4.0.0 host running, but I'm uncertain about what update version I'm running.

    In the vSphere client when I highlight the ESXi host it says ESXi 4.0.0 360236. I'm I then running update 1 or update 2 or am I not running any update? Please help

    To find out which Update you have installed you can check the build number on the update site at http://www.vmware.com/patch/download/

    I put together the ESXi 4.0 patches and updates for a better overview.

    There's a build list here which lists the major release and update numbers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_ESX.   But given that the build number will change with each ESXi patch you can consult the patch download list here - http://www.vmware.com/patch/download/.  In your case you're running the March 7 path for ESXi 4.0.0 (i.e. a post update 2 patch).

    So as long as my build numer is larger than VMware ESXi 4.0 Update 2 (Build 261974) then I'm at least at build 2?

    Exactly. The update/patch packages include all previous patches.

    Why doesn't vmware just increment the minor version number for each patch?

    So the latest patch 9 would be:

    4.0.9

    What would that break?

    It sure would make it easier to communicate your patch level.

    Hi,  I am also confused by vmware upate patches.

    one of my customer is sitting in ESXi 4.1.0 Build 721871, then it means it has been patched only by Esxi410-201206001 and  this patch incorporate other patched in lower positon ? ie incremental ? or it has been patched all the including previous patches ? what is the relationship or matrix of different Esxi update patches ?

    Try to think assumption: if we only patch Esxi410-201011001 and Esxi410201201001 in base version 4.1.0 build 260247, then which build number it should show up?

    I am doing advisory analysis and version evolution, then I should have very clear idea of those patches relationship or Matrix in Vmware production.
