  • 1.  IBM Storage LTO Ultrium

    Hello. I have an IBM Storage LTO Ultrium tape.

    We connected it to the server via SAS connector.

    Can I connect it to ESXI 6.7 ? Any technical documentation ?

    To ESX? No!

    Trough ESXi into a VM. Maybe!

     

    ESXi doesnt support any Tape at all. Also i cant remember about any 3rd. party SUPPORTED solutions from the known vendors.  What i saw on customer sites is the following:

    • Use the PCI Passtrough feature to pass the complete SAS HBA with the connnect Tape into a Windows VM
    • The Customer have Dell Tapelibs which are rebranded IBM TotalStorage
    • They use Veeam inside the Windows VM to write the Data onto Tape

    From the past it (years ago... ESX 5.x or so) did not always went well

    • Symantec have trouble to relase the tape
