  • 1.  HP ESXi on Proliant servers??

    Posted Nov 30, 2009 05:02 PM

    I am reading http://vmwaretips.com/wp/2009/10/27/vmware-esxi-4-and-hp-servers/

It says any HP supported hard drives, it's downloadable at: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM06

    1. Can this be used with a licensed VMware Virtual Center Server??

    2. When will an update for 4.0 Update 1 be released??

    3. Can this work on HP Proliant DL380's with HP hard drives installed?? (It should, double-checking).

    4. For monitoring, does one install SMH into the host's vMA server??

    Thank you, Tom

    Yes it can.

    2. When will an update for 4.0 Update 1 be released??

HP is usually a little behind the generic release. There are issues with the HP modules and update 1. Stay at 4 until there is a release from HP

    3. Can this work on HP Proliant DL380's with HP hard drives installed?? (It should, double-checking).

    Yes.

    4. For monitoring, does one install SMH into the host's vMA server??

The HP version of ESXi includes CIM modules (similar to SNMP agents) that will provide monitoring information to vCenter.

I've read that the HP modules issue does not apply to ESXi, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I need Update 1 because we have to become able to deploy Win28 R2 VMs...

With regard to the CIM modules, VCenter will "know" that those are there and use them accordingly?? (nice that one apparently does not have to install HP SMH anywhere)

    Thank you, Tom

I will look further into the CIM issue with 4. In order to get the HP CIM modules you will need to install the HP version of ESXi 4 and then patch to Update 1. The CIM modules communicate with the IPMI interface. Depending on your server you should get a pretty good view of your hardware. vCenter can alarm on a very long list of hardware and software issues.

I emailed HP Software Depot and asked when they might have an Update 1

    version available.

    Thank you, Tom

later: I received an unhelpful reply telling me to call another department. :smileysad:

Do you know if I must get a key(s) from HP or if I can use VMware key(s) for the ESXi??

Or maybe someone else knows?? -- I want to plan to install this and use our current VMware ESX/vSphere Enterprise license.

    Thank you, Tom

You should be able to use the same keys. You choose whether you install ESX or ESXi.
