  • 1.  How to update a VM template and reseal it

    Posted Apr 19, 2013 08:06 AM

         Hi

I have a VM template out of date on the HW Version, VM tools and Win Updates.

How do I update it and reseal so when it's next deployed it asks me for machine name and all (sysprep)

    This is a W2K8 R2.

    Thanks, Maelito

All you really need to do is

    1) Convert the template back to a virtual machine using the vSpheer client

    2) Update the machine - update the HW, Tools, and Windows patches - and confirm everything still works (you might want to take a snapshot before doing all of this, just don't forget to remove the snapshot once you have confirmed all is well!)

    3) Power off and convert back to template.

It is not necessary to manually sysprep the VM before converting to template if you are using Customization Specifications in vSphere Client.  When using the Customization Specification for Windows 2008 R2, when you power up the VM, the guest OS will automatically execute sysprep and generalize the OS install for you.
