How to install ESXi 4 and Qlogic QLE8152 CNA?

  • 1.  How to install ESXi 4 and Qlogic QLE8152 CNA?

    Posted Feb 19, 2010 05:07 AM

I have an 5 HP DL585G5 servers with 1 Qlogic QLE8152 CNA firmware 2.13 in each server. (NOTE: I have many other DL585G5 with Qlogic QLE8042 CNA. All are working with ESXi 4.) All are connected to Cisco Nexus 5000 series.

I have installed either vSphere 4.0.0 Bld 164009 & 4.0 U1 Bld 208167. I can NOT get the management port to ping out or be pingable. Obviously, I do NOT know if the storage side is working....

    Tried to boot to either:

    - vmware-esx-drivers-net-qlge_400.1.0.0.37-1.0.4.00000.230584.iso

    - vmware-esx-drivers-scsi-qla2xxx_400.831.k1.23vmw-1.0.4.00000.207277.iso

as I did with driver CD for Qlogic QLE8042 CNA with ESX 3.5. The driver ISOs did NOT boot. I have found nothing online how to utilize either ISO so I can get the QLE8152 to work with ESXi 4. Is there a document/instructions somewhere?

Help I need to get these systems installed and working ASAP!

Did you look at the driver offered here: [http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCategory=io&productId=1&keyBasic=cna&maxDisplayRows=50&key=&release[]=-1&datePosted=-1&vid=&did=&svid=&ssid=]

Yes I did. That was the reference to the 2 ISOs.

I tried to utilize the ISOs as I had when I initially installed ESX 3.5 with the QLE8042. That drive ISO was bootable, then prompted for the install CD for ESX 3.5.

There is no documentation for using these new ISOs...

    Hi,

This is how you need to use the ISO images provided by VMware.

you need to extract the files available in ISO's. Both drivers need to be extracted. one is qla2xx and another is qlge.

After you extract the drivers, put the host into maintenance mode, and then copy the files to one of your datastores, and then run the esxupdate command to update the driver.

There will be a offline-bundle folder in the extracted files of each ISO. Move to that folder and run "esxupdate --bundle driverfile.zip update"

If this is answered, please mark it answered.

    Thanks

I just wanted to note that I had this same issue and the post stating to download the driver did the trick.

If you just go to Qlogic's site and pick your card and then select ESX as your OS, it'll redirect you to VMwares site for the download.

You'll download an ISO and you'll need to extract it.

In there, there is a "offline" related folder and in that folder there is a zip.

Go to update manager and click on the Patch Repository tab and then click on import patches at the top and browse to that zip file to upload it.

You'll need to create a "extensions" baseline (Vmware's way of saying driver) and pick that newly uploaded file/patch.

    Greetings All,

I am running into the same issue with an IBM blade center.  I have 2 ESXi4 server running nothing currently.  Is it possible to install the drivers in their current state or do I have to crush and rebuild them.  If it is possible to add the driver can someone tell me how.  In the new version the CLI is gone.  Thanks for your time.

You'll want to extract the offline patch bundle from the ISO image as noted earlier.  You can then use vihostupdate.pl from the vCLI  or Set-VMHostFirmware from PowerCLI to update your hosts with the additional driver.

Thanks Dave for the quick responce.  I actually found the vCLI tool shortly after posting my message.  How ever when I attempted the update, I received some errors.  Please see below and let me know if I have a syntex error or I need to approch a different way.

    D:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>vihostupdate.pl --server 19
    2.168.xxx.xxx -i -b D:\VMUPDATE\qlg.831.k1.23vmw-offline_bundle-207277.zip
    Enter username: root
    Enter password:
Please wait patch installation is in progress ...
No matching bulletin or VIB was found in the metadata. No bulletins for this plat
form could be found. Nothing to do.

The server is in maintinace mode and I was mistaken its ESXi 4.1.0.

I beleive you'll want this driver version for 4.1 - ESX / ESXi 4.11  qla2xxx version 832.k1.27.1-1vmw async .  There's a download for it on the drivers page.

Thanks for the advice.  You were 100% correct, once I pulled and extracted the bundle.  It installed and after a reboot the storage adapter appeared.  I was also able to find the ethernet adapter driver and it installed correctly as well.

Thanks for your assistance on this issue.

    Cheers
