How to extend c drive size of windows xp virtual machine

Hi,

we have windows xp sp3 installed in vmware esx 4.1. the virtual is running out of space, we need to increase the disk space of xp virtual machine. we don't want to use any third party software for extending the size. please let me know if any other method is there to solve our issue.

You can either use e.g. a Windows 7 DVD/ISO to boot the VM into repiar mode (Command Line) and run diskpart to extend the partition or attach the vmdk to another/helper XP-VM and use diskpart from there. Both options will only work if there's only one partition on the virtual disk or if you want to grow the last partition (with the additional adjacent disk space)

... please make sure your VM does not have any snapshots before resizing the virtual disk! The GUI won't allow it anyway, but manual resizing through the CLI will break the VM if it runs with snapshots.

Or what else you can do is shutdown your xp workstation, add aditional space to the disk,

connect the disk to an other xp vm and use diskpart on that vm to increase the space.

Thats what i do.

After that, delete the disk from the vm (not from the storage!!) and start the vm.
