    Posted Nov 16, 2011 06:19 AM

    Dear Concern, Hi,

    I have 6 Dell R710 Servers having 2 ESXi-4 "&" 4 ESXi-5. all of them internal RD1000 backup drive is available.

I have 2 Redhat Linxu O/S and rest Windows 2008 R2 (Enterprise & Standard 64bit) operating systems are running & in production.

My question is: I would like to utilize RD1000 tape backup drive to take back via Symantec Backup Exec. and in some server via windows backup.

So in this connection kindly help/guide to perfrom this job.

    Waiting for your swift response.

    With many thanks & regards.

    Dear All,

Finally I got answer; Using the RD1000 for backups is not supported on ESXi hosts, this is for any version of ESX be it 3.x, 4.x or 5.x.

    With Thanks & Regards

.... however... using an external RD1000 can easily be made to work.

Just finished testing a workaround for this issue in ESXi5... use a Silex USB-to-IP Adapter, works great. And best part is there are 2 USB devices you can map to 2 different VM's.

    our configuration is:

2 ESXi5 Hosts, 13 VM's, one of which is running 2K8R2 with Symantec BE 2010 R3 and backing up data from other VM's including Exchange to the RD1000. The SX3000GB is plugged into the Switch and the SBE connects to it via IP and wha laa... SBE sees the RD1000 just like it was plugged in to the physical machine. And being Gigabit, it ain't slow... averaging around 240MB/s

    Hello,

Moved to the VMware ESXi 5 forum. Using a USB over IP device works well for devices like this as you can then move the VMs around. It is also possible to use the local USB but that is not recommended.
